I think a lot of the reason why players play the same map (other than that there are very few CA suitable maps) is that changing the map requires a vote.

If a main rotation of 10-12 maps were established where all of them were acceptably good, the new server could become like successful server of other mods where maps rotate.

Well, then you will be able to play (at least initially) because this isn't a theoretical thread. The server exists.

i'd play it.. cuz as everyone knows im not a one trick pony.. i can play any level and win. BUT it cant be on rage, cuz im banned. Hahaha
also r00k aerowalk is a popular qw map and i try to play it often in ca but everyone else is terrified of the map because they arent any good.. i dont think the problem is that people just dont want to play new maps, its because they arent good at them and dont know the maps.. some people know dm3 so well they dont need to be that good at quake, just know where to be and listen before they fire.. but in new maps they dont understand how to run them so they refuse to play them..

Having a single port dedicated to custom maps would be a nice offset to the normal DM3 port. It could easily be created to show statistics at the end of the match, go into intermission, then rotate to another map, (while still offering a timely manner to vote for a warp also). Multiple maps would level the playing field a bit as some players are better on certain maps than others, and the variety of maps/strategy only would make the game more dynamic and the player's skill more tested. :d

ps. we could look at the popular QW CA maps as a basis?

I would be more than happy to play on such a server, but whether I play there or not depends on what maps are in that rotation. Thats a vital area for concern on such a map, especially if the oldskoolio CA'rs was to even think about playing at such a place. Its hard and at times impossible, but if you can appeal to the hardcore CA community, you'll be praised by all.

Would you play at a Clan Arena server running 100% high quality custom maps with an actual map rotation where the map changes after the end of each round?

    Background

The original QuakeOne maps pack was a failure in the sense that only about 5 of the 31 maps really worked well at all for Clan Arena.

But when the QuakeOne maps pack was devised, it was expected that the pack would get used for DM with only a secondary consideration for CA and at the time there was little understand by anyone what makes a map good or bad for clan area because very little experimentation had been done with custom maps and CA+ at the time (because CA+ crashed on most non-DM3 maps).

When the CAx mod was being heavily developed, the main strength was the support for custom maps but this was offset by the lack of custom maps that really work for clan arena. The end result was a very high quality mod with great custom map support and 26 really bad custom maps to go along with it.
Working...
