Is the grass greener on DM3 in this version of Quake? I seen its demanding $ for the word Enhanced. What is this witchcraft that keeps me from connecting to a QE server.
lol
Rudolf syndrome maybe
It's not special, just a re-release of Quake by some random game dev company. They have client side prediction like QW does, so it's really no better than QW.
I got QRE for free because I already owned Quake on Steam before its re-release. No where as good as the Q2RE re-release, but meh, it's ok. The dynamic lights and new maps are kind of nice, but it runs in Vulkan only and runs kind of ass vs FTE, IronWail, or even Quakespasm.
In my very humble opinion the re-releases of Quake are quite great (and remasters), I am saying all this as maybe some of those enthusiasts will reach here. They are re-introducing these great games to the new generation of masses who maybe didn't know about Quake before. Now, do I agree with the changes made to the gameplay? Yes and no, on one hand the new crowd may expect or like more modernized things, but the purists like sticking to the old. Maybe there was made a compromise here..
From what I know these new Quake games run on a new engine called KEX. It is one used by the company NightDive Studios in many of their remasters or remakes on Steam for FPS's. You guys can check out their portfolio there, it is quite extensive. I got most of their games which I bought. Now this new engine, probably with some in-house decisions, was made to play more like QW to accommodate players from all distances maybe. How this engine fully works, idk because I haven't fully tested it yet to say how similar it is to the original Quake. But it is quite shortcoming that, for example, I don't think it would connect to Shmack or other servers used here.
From what I know, Machine Games and NightDive are quite serious game companies and I enjoy their games. They have taken over a bit some of the work from id with some projects to release them under their own labels. They also made a new Indiana Jones game in 3d which I am looking forward to playing Maybe the best thing about the Quake re-releases is that it has a lot of great mods baked into the main game already, and I can just select and go play any of them with ease. Rather than the old way of installing all mods manually and tinkering with everything to get them to work in an optimal way. The weakest thing with it is that it can't connect to our servers here and it might have QW netcode or mimicking it (thus impacting individual desired gameplay), and also I have observed that the RL fires quite slow (like Quake Live) in comparison to much faster rocket shots in original Quake. Maybe the best solution to this is to implement a toggle to players that want these [missing?] features. Maybe someone can tell them that. This solution may appease both the old and new crowd and get them to play Quake together perhaps
The gemstone of gaming is Quake, so load it up and play some
