  • QuakeOne - 20 Years

I noticed that the first post was March 9, 2006. The site started with the intention of being a Quake forum where anyone could post about anything and that it would have a server browser so everyone knew everywhere you could play a game of Quake. There were 10 main servers listed on the front page and any server that had players on it would automatically show on the front page.

Moderating the forums was mostly the frequent posts with illegal Quake download links (at the time, Quake 1 was not sold anywhere, not even on the internet as the ID Software store no longer worked). Some people from Inside3D forums would slightly complain that the illegal Quake download links were not deleted fast enough.

Over 100 people registered just the first day.

A year later, there were 40, 50 or 60 players every night. I remember playing a 16 player CA game on Q3DM6 and someone joined the game and asked "Are you guys bots?" -- and everyone started laughing and quite a bit of spamming of "Get the maps quakeone.com/maps"

A couple of years later, Seven started posting DarkPlaces screenshots and downloads to crazy things he made and after a while, that had a life of its own ...

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Wow it's been 20 years! Holy Moly.
A big thank you to everyone that has made positive contributions over the years. Whether that be through fantastic creations like SMC, Arcane Dimensions, Countless Mods, Maps Packs, Graphical enhancements, Improved Engines, or even just down to making the community a nicer place to hang out. You know who you are and thank you one and all.

    Kind regards
    Monty

Man, time flies! And I can't believe it's been so long. We all grew old! haha! Cheers to the next 20! I can't wait until everyone retires and we have full servers again!

Very cool this place has stuck around. I haven't played Quake in ages, but still appreciate the games and times I've had, both in Q1 and Q3 specifically.

        Here's to 20 more years!

Good times. I suppose I used to joke that the FvF Hub server was a Quaker retirement community? Too real now. Anyhow, I guess Quake will be 30 years old this year. .

I'm glad these forum emoticons survived, even though I always kind of hated them. Hehe.

Oh, I guess we just missed the anniversary of QTest, first released on February 24, 1996.

          30 years, dudes.

June 22, 1996. I looked up that date, when I posted my post above this one,

Then I went to watch TV.

There I saw June 22. About 20 minutes in. On a calendar. A significant date. Marked.

The show? Monk's Last Case. Had not seen it before.

Quake.. great game, great frags, great friends

Speaking of TV, the nostalgia pairs well with 90s movies.
I just saw Stargate from 1994 and I instantly recognized
the 'drip.. drip.. drip.. [short pause].. [deep sounding] drip'
sound patterns from a cave scene in the movie which sounds
the same as the cave dripping water sounds from some Quake
              water levels. Amazing!!

Here's to another fun and great 20 more years. Whoo hoo!!

Did the drip sound anything like this?

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2KH5AoyeBc

Anyhow, I've heard the Quake1 ambient drip1.wav (apparently from a Foley library) many times in movies over the years. Very familiar pattern.

Funny you mention Stargate. Besides the round slipgates, we've got Ziggurat Vertigo, which is a lot like a pyramid in space (low grav. included). Not to mention, the portal-y slipgate is made of "water" with a starry texture, usually. Which you'll notice if you swim up and down in a round slipgate, if it happens to be disabled by a mod. Besides the liquid transparency from that old Vis1 patch.

Of course there are other inspirations...

I guess we had to wait until Hexen 2 to get explicitly Egyptian artifacts, though.

Yea, it was like that bird sound but only water droplets instead. I think Quake was heavily inspired by Stargate movie, now that you mention it. I do remember that being mentioned in some old interviews with the devs. The whole going through the Slipgates thing and ending up in different dimensions (very similar to the movie) - and having the Egyptian themes and liquid teleporters. They studied some ancient architectures prior for the construction of the game levels. Plus the Quake guy was originally envisioned as having only an axe and some thunder to it, but then later they added in all the other weapons and made more out of this game =)

You introduced me to the pleasure of single player awesomeness. I had only understood multiplayer awesomeness before you explained single player awesomeness to me (and I initially was quite confused to how single player could be good --- man I was wrong!).

Before I understood single player awesomeness, I knew 3 dimensions width, depth and height. And now I enjoy width, depth, height and trength.

(I understand I have violated a taboo of pan-dimension beings not revealing the nicknames for the extra dimension, but this pan-dimensional being has a beer so you have to deal with it.)

To Baker: of course nothing beats the self-pleasure of Quake like sitting down with a cup o Java (or something) and settling deep into a nice and soft computer chair and firing up a good ole session of a Quake map or mod And then hopping onto a online multiplayer game of sorts after, then after all the keyboard clacking and mouse mashing - finishing with deep bend back upon the said chair with arms interlocked and stretching behind your head and self exclaiming to one self: 'Ahh.. that was some good 'ol Quaking Goodness!

To Spirit: thanks a whole inexplicable bunch for taking care and hosting these invaluable resources so we can all enjoy them over the years! I plan to play each one

To both: is there a way to download the whole site as a big zip pack or do I got to sit down and download each file? (For archival purposes or later planned play) - something which I don't look forward to

(And sorry for posting so much in this thread hehe)

I started to play some (few) of the mod paks and I gotta say, although most are hard, they are actually very fun and different from the main game. I put off playing them due to lack of time but now I see how important is to experience these offerings. They are really good! I urge anybody who thinks they know Quake to play these mods from Spirit's website, because they redefine the genre I think. What I'm saying goes with the 20 years of Quake Legacy of this thread. The single player awesomeness is here as well. Thank you. Have fun everyone
