34 now, was 24 when my DAD introduced me to Quake. He's now 63 and still quakes, but only once or twice a year. He got me started, though...

    Erm

Phew, and all this talk on Rage and HDZ about me being the oldest @34. Glad to see more of us "old timers" are out there than most think.

Started playing Quake in 1996, freshman year of college, I'm 29 now.

I played CS for a couple years, it has it's moments, but it's actually more repetitive than CA. Everyone spawns in same location runs to the same spot and fight. Rinse, lather, repeat.

24 here, started when I was 15. Only played Q1 for a few months and switched to Q2. Now played Q1 for 7-8 months on and off. Have nothing against CS, good game, very diff. from Q, as Phen mentioned.

I don't like counter strike because of hackers, and I REALLY like to respawn.

By the way, what is it that Quakers have against Counter-Strike? I like both games (I stopped playing CS recently when i switched to linux) Does liking both games make me a bad person?
While Counter Strike isn't my game of choice, I don't hate it, it's physics are almost completely different then Quake's which puts it at the other end of the FPS spectrum.

In Counter Strike camping an area is accepted more where as in Quake camping an area can actually get you kicked/banned on some servers(Comparing CS to Clan Arena). Another difference I've noticed is Quake is a much faster paced experience where you have to make almost every move a split second decision where as in Counter Strike you almost have to premeditate your movement, meaning it is more tactical maneuvering where as Quake is more dynamic improvising during a game.

I actually enjoy playing HL's Day of Defeat which has more of a CS feel then Quake

Gosh, my dad is 53... when he was a kid, his parents used to be concerned about "****** music" (hey, it was the 60s!) instead of "killer games".

I started Quake in ... 1998 or something, played the shareware but it was on-and-off. I immediately liked the game though. I remember watching the original demos and thinking "gosh these guys are fast" :-E *wahaa*

Although I remember me and two friends playing Doom in 1992 or 1993 via serial cable (IIRC). It was crazy. We would also take turns playing on a single PC (a pentium 90) for whole nights (!) using the keyboard (!) and that was cool. We eventually moved on to Doom2, and I remember us talking about this new game that was even more extreme than Doom. Quake. We couldn't imagine anything more extreme than Doom so we kept playing that. Of course all those games were banned in Germany. I remember one guy from school whispering to me, "I have Wolfenstein! You can kill nazis there!!!"

    :-)

Then came the army and all sorts of other shit, and I think in 1996 I didn't even have a computer. I was playing in bands at that time and studying so I wasn't that interested in "killing games" anymore. I think I then got an Atari ST and there was no Quake for that. Not even Doom. Anyway I learned how to use a compiler. (At the time, I was rebelling against Windows. Uh, still am.) I got a PSX for gaming which I used to its fullest potential ;-) until 2002 or so. My favourites were Tekken (once played with 8 people, that was ridiculous), TombRaider, Final Fantasy, Dino Crisis 2 (I used to speedrun that in around an hour) and a number of similar titles. Then I got a Linux PC and used that ever since. I might have played Quake regularly since 2002 or 2003. I'm pretty much a newbie I guess.
