  • Quake: The Only Question That Matters

    The Setup

Some people say that Quake is dead or that Quake can't be revived. They've been saying this for years.

Behind every belief, you have to have a set of reasons. So the above statement "Quake is dead", what are the reasons for this?

Quake is "dead" for a lot of various reasons. But the gameplay is solid and is the best there is of any FPS game. So it isn't dead due to the gameplay.

I view and have always viewed Quake as a game not worth playing. Both the multiplayer and the single player. I'll get to that [sort of].

So I actually have the opposite point of view of most people. I think Quake sucks. But that isn't quite true, I think Quake sucks now.

So when someone says to me something about the state of the game ("Quake is dead", "we only have 3 or 4 busy servers", etc.), my response in my head is "No shit. Look at everything." But I never say this!

I think Quake is getting closer to a game worth playing. But it still has a bridge or 2 to cross.

Here is the main problem with Quake, it's this next question ...

    The real question ...

Would you recommend Quake to a friend? My answer is no, by the way. But I expect this answer to change later in the year.

What is your answer and why or why not?

In the past 2 years, I've persuaded at least 50 friends to play Quake at least once. LAN games ftw.

I voted yes, once Quake gets some "polish" on it I plan on offering it as a free download to my PSP related website.

Since theres a PSP version of Quake I can see quite a few ways to take that idea. While PSP-Quake might not be the best way to play Quake for many oldschool'ers and newschoolers, it gives people more options Portable Quake!

You're on to something with this. For 2 or 3 different reasons.

It's a little ironic that your PSP site gets more traffic than any Quake site.

                Hell, yes.

It may not offer the more in-depth immersion of a more modern game, but for the right balance of sheer simplicity and technological capability nothing comes close. Plus it will run on anything.

I've always thought that the PSP (and other portables) would be a natural home for Quake in the 21st century.

                  MH, your blog is awesome.

Is there a way to download your engine or are you just talking about your ideas as you work on them?

/If the latter, I can definitely understand that.

Anyone who hasn't seen his page should definitely look that over.

It's still work-in-progress at the moment, but most everything reported there has already been coded.

I always try to bring people to Quake. But it's always the same excuse: It's old, the graphics sucks...

GLPRO looks on par, and much better then DOOM. A lot of people still ask for and play DOOM. I votes "yes."
