  • ? about Rquake, installing models/textures, and Qrack brightness.

Ok, this is my first ever thread here on quakeone.com. I've been a lurker for a long time, just generally getting my feet wet downloading Quake engines, maps, mods and whatnot. It's been a long process, but I think I have an alright handle on how to install and use stuff like Qrack or how to use new maps ETC. I've grown pretty accustomed to seeing Baker's and Rook's posts in the time I've spent here and I hope you guys are among the people that post in this thread. Thanks for all the time you guys devote to enhancing Quake for average joes like me.

About Rquake: The main download link for it appears to be broken. If I click on Rquake in the mods list on the left of quakeone.com, then click on the downloads section for rquake, then try clicking on the link that says "full version with 30 page manual ETC" it just returns you to quakeone's homepage. I'd like to try this mod out, so can someone investigate? The other DL links under the main one appear to be working though.

Is Rquake the best coop mod available? I DL'd another coop mod called Qetia from here but haven't had the chance to try it out yet. What do guys think of Qetia? Both Rquake and Qetia support bots and both make changes to items and how the monsters behave, so it seems like playing these mods by yourself would also be fun.

About models and textures: I mainly use the Qrack and Darkplaces engines, but I've grown rather partial to Qrack for some reason. I really like the lava smoke and underwater effects for it. When I DL'd Qrack, I also DL'd the models/texture pack for it and installed it no problem. Just unzipped it to Qrack folder. But now I'm looking at the awesome stuff for the quake reforged project and have some questions.

I'm totally lost as to how to install this stuff for both DP and Qrack. Although I'm already pretty happy with the models and textures in Qrack after installing the add on pak. The install faq for QRP just confuses me because I either don't have the folders it's talking about or I'm unsure if I install the stuff to the Quake LD1 folder or to the DP/Qrack folders. Also, once I install new models/textures, there's no way to turn them on or off or switch to other texture/model packs? Like, once I install the QRP stuff for Qrack, I won't be able to use the models/textures I'm currently using anymore?

About Qrack brightness: Qrack is just rather dark on my display and the menu option for gamma only goes up to like .5 I think. The highest gamma and contrast settings are ok, but I'd really prefer just a tad brighter. Is there anything else I can try or do? Any console commands I dont know about? The gamma console command is the same as the menu option I found out, so no help there. It doesnt seem to go any brighter than .5. I dont have this problem in DP since DP gives you quite a few brightness sliders and options.

For the models/textures changing, you can stuff the different models into different folders then use gamedir "mymodelset" to switch model sets. In your new gamedir just add a "progs" and "textures" folder and put your appropriate files in their folders and your set. Sounds too!

    gl_contrast 1.8 for me works, with gl_gamma 0.6

Rook, hey man! I love your engine. The amount of work you put into Quake must be HUGE. Thanks again. (I like the DP engine a lot too and use it as well, so good job to whoever is responsible for it.) Like I said, I'm just kinda partial to qrack now.

Hey, I bet you're right about the console commands you gave me. I was trying the command "gamma" without the GL part. I'm about to go test and find out. Turns out I was using the console commands from a list made in like 1998.

I'm really enjoying all the tinkering you can do with Quake and all these engines-- the possibilities are endless.

Rook, do you have a user manual for Qrack that can be viewed or downloaded? Cause there isn't really any documentation that comes with your engine. I'd love to get my hands on a complete list of console commands for Quake and your Qrack.

Thanks for the answer on how to switch between textures and models. I'll take a stab at trying what you said.

I'm gonna go try those gl brightness console commands now. TY.

Turns out gl_gamma is the same as "gamma." Highest brightness is 0.5. The brightness level on my Qrack is nowhere near bad, I just would prefer a little brighter for my display. So I'm SOL then I assume?

Also, if anyone can answer my question about Rquake, go for it.

To play Rquake Team Coop online you only need to download the maps and connect to one of the servers running the mod:

          USA: hub.quakeone.com:26003
          Europe: flanders.servegame.org:26001

Try -gamma .3 in your command line

              Efess,

In Qrack, gamma 0.5 is the highest brightness you can achieve. If you try gamma 0.4 or gamma 0.3 nothing happens. Thanks though.

Sometimes the command line switches work better than the in-game ones. You also might want to look into your video card's control panel. I've seen where you can set up custom brightness/color controls for games or video modes or whatever.

I'd say RQuake is the most played coop mod on this site, and I've not heard of Qetia...

ok wait. I thought "command line" was the same thing as using a console command in-game via the console. I'm confused-- are these not the same things? If they aren't, what exactly is a command line and how do I use it to improve my brightness?

And could some nice person who runs this site fix the Rquake team coop download page/link so I can download it? I sent a PM to Baker, but he might not have read it yet.

The command line is a relic from the MS-DOS days (the target platform back in 1996 when quake was released). These days, most operating systems use some form of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and you start Quake by clicking on some icon or file, but in MS-DOS (or linux/mac terminal for that matter) you would start quake by typing in the name of the executable on the command line.. optionally followed by some parameters/switches to change its behavior..

                    example:
                    command-prompt | command | command-parameters
                    c:\games\quake\> glpro400.exe -mem 64 -zone 8192 -gamma .75

In windows you can still start quake with these command line parameters, but you will have to make a shortcut to the executable and edit its properties..
Add the command line parameters after the executable in the target field, like so:

.. and then use the shortcut to start quake.

As far as Rquake goes, if you want to setup your own server (to play coop with friends on LAN, I presume) then you best contact RocketGuy (PM him).
Rquake needs a custom server executable (along with the latest bug-fixed progs.dat) to run properly, so RocketGuy can sort all that out for you..

Wait, i DO know what the command line is then. I've been using command line parameters to run mods and single player map packs. So, instead of trying to increase my brightness through the in-game console commands, you guys are suggesting using a gamma parameter in the command line itself-- got it.

Technically speaking, why would a command work in the command line but NOT work as a console command from in-game? Just curious. I'll try it though. Thank you for being patient.

As for Rquake, I bet what you just said is the reason why the main link for it doesn't work. Rocketguy must only be providing the means to play it online at the current server that's set up. (I guess you can play online as long as you DL the map pack as someone suggested earlier.) Guess I'll PM him.

It probably won't make a difference. The reason it was suggested is because the only way to adjust the gamma in the original glpro client was through the command line. Gamma could not be easily adjusted with glquake.exe, so when Grossman created proquake, he implemented the gamma from the command line adjustment.

At least for proquake (not sure about other clients) there IS a difference:

Setting gamma with the gamma command in-game -> major FPS drop when you take quad or pent.

Setting gamma in command line -> no such FPS drop

Visually it's all the same tho..
