  • Age of the Keyboard + Autoaim?

I just read that laptops/notebooks are 60% of the home PC market.

What percent of those people are really going to be using a mouse?

If so, maybe on a server or 2, shouldn't there be a return to flatter maps that are more keyboard friendly and Doom 2 style auto-aim?

I mean using a touchpad or the keyboard is asking to get pounded, the same way that those Wii or PSP players connect to a Quake server and are freebies.

    Just thinking out loud ...

On the plus side, someone bothering to use a bot when there is auto-aim would be a little silly. Combined with anti-wallhack, there wouldn't be a meaningful way for someone to cheat on an auto-aim enabled server.

I wonder what percent of players no longer play because they are using a laptop and can't compete with desktop + mouse players?

Glitch could use something like this baker. He may claim he uses a mouse, but it is more like abuses one. Dude is all thumbs. Anything to help his aim would be much appreciated.

I think this idea would work more for people on PSP or Wii, or other ports that use a specialized controller.

I bet the majority of that 60% use a mouse with their laptop. The trackpad is nice when it comes to portability, but for extended use at a desk, a mouse is a lot more comfortable.

A server like this would have to restrict how fast you can look in order for the mouse players not to have an advantage. I remember Descent 3 did this in favor of the joystick players.

It's pretty easy to use a mouse with a laptop. My uncle does so and he doesn't even play games on his laptop. It's just so much better than the other meathods that are in place for cursor movement on laptops that even the average joe should want one.

I really don't think that Quake needs to change to suit these laptop users. Firstly, out of all the PC market, less than 1% still play quake, wether it's a desktop or a laptop, so it's not going to be nescessary. Secondly, it's much easier to use a mouse with your laptop rather than to make a series of boring, flat maps nobody would want to play. Thirdly, most people who gave gaming in mind use a desktop anyway.

I have really funny Quake ideas.

          Some are downright hilarious.

Ok, ok Baker I'm calling you out!
Playing Quake with just a KB isn't so bad Baker, although when using a laptop I do prefer a mouse....I've never tried Quake on a laptop though.
Playing with just a kb is silly I know, not sure why after all these years
I still play like I did from the start (with no mouse).
Funny, when I play any other newer games I use the mouse?
So.... to all you kber's, hang in there and happy hunting!

Eh? I'm not so sure of that.

How many people are using a laptop at a desk when they are home?

Because that's almost where they'd have to be to have a mousepad or a flat surface for an optical mouse.

I think laptops get used on couches and beds and such a lot more than a desk.

You aren't so bad for a keyboarder.

I'm not suggesting a change. Rather an addition.

Someday what I am thinking will become clear No one would be able to guess.

Definitely. The touchpad's actually quite usable in SP, it's just a matter of using the Synaptics control panel to disable tapping (the biggest issue) and getting used to it (which takes a coupla weeks).

Of course it doesn't compare to a proper mouse, but it's not the unmitigated disaster some might think.

I'm use fullsized keyboard and mouse at home with my notebook, and fullsized mouse always in notebook's case. I think, it is a good practice.

I use a laptop and use a big clunky logitech usb trackball and it works great. I'm curious how well it would play with a gamepad?

I've been playing single player with just a keyboard with my engine, but only because it doesn't have mouse support. Damn WinQuake.

Firstly... winquake has mouse support. Use +mlook in the autoexec.cfg file.

Secondly... why are you using winquake?
