  • Luma, Gloss, Normalmap, Bump?

Hi. I've been playing Quake for years now, but have only just recently gotten into customizing it with things like hi-res textures, new models, and skins.

While looking at all of these I noticed that for some monster and item skins, there are gloss, Luma, Normalmap, and bump files in addition to the standard ones for one particular thing. What's the difference between all these and are they all necessary?

I'm just going to guess here, and assume these files are masks for various filters. By the name of each, you can sorta tell which filters they represent, bumps (takes the input image and makes it look bumpy), Luma ?, and Glossy (how much that part of the image reflects light)

If you open those images, are they various levels of gray?

I did notice the luma files for the bmodels have some part of them blackened out.

Most of them are in tga format, so I'm not sure how to open them.

Normal maps are a sort of bumpmaps. Gloss / specular maps are for shininess. Luma is a special effect that makes stuff seem to glow in the dark (luminescence). As far as I know.

TGA files are opened in an image editor like GIMP or Photoshop.

Luma gives you fullbright colour effects like in software Quake.

Open them in any image editor.
