  • ProQuake 3.90 on Win7

I purchased a new laptop and transfered my Q folder to the new laptop. When I load glpro, there is a thick black vertical line on each side of the screen, a few inches thick. Also, it is very choppy, I just walk around and it chops.

    Are there starter-tips for win7?

The ProQuake downloads have been back up for nearly a week.

    Try 4.52 .... http://quakeone.com/proquake/proquake_452.zip

3.90 is from 2007, it's really old and missing countless bug fixes and improvements that have been for system compatibility and such.

Sounds like you have the "system clock" issue with that 3.90, I fixed that somewhere around 3.93 ... it isn't a ProQuake bug but a GLQuake/WinQuake bug relating to the clock timing for multiple-core machines and sometimes even graphics drivers.

I did some checking on chi.quakeone.com about why Qrack can't connect. It isn't Qrack's fault and it isn't something about ProQuake server, it looks like the server firewall has some ports blocked. Check out the last couple of replies in that thread for the details.

Also, disabling the media throttling feature in registry may help if you are experiencing weird lag..

PQ 4.52 doesnt load properly, but 4.00 runs fine. The only problem seems to be the vertical lines on the sides, can this be fixed with -height -width on cmd line? I tried but I got an error message.

Could you explain that? Do you get an error message or something? This bothers me greatly.

Try gl_clear 1 and gl_ztrick 0 in your autoexec.cfg in ProQuake 4.00; alternatively you might try dx8pro or d3dpro (DirectX versions ... heavily optimized lately and nearly glpro fast). dx8pro is better than the d3dpro build.

My mistake, 4.52 loads also, but the vertical lines are still there.

Another problem I seem to have is the mouse speed, it is very fast for side movement, but the rest seems slower... Is there something I can disable to fix this.

check your mouse driver.. make sure enhanced pointer precision is off, adjust m_yaw/m_pitch in quake if needed..

The thick black vertical lines are being caused by you running at a 4:3 resolution (like 1024x768) whereas your laptop's montor has a widescreen native resolution (like 1280x768). A lot of laptop monitors are actually not capable of switching to the lower resolution and so must emulate it by surrounding the display with black bars.

You'll need to either run in a window or run at your native resolution, but this isn't a ProQuake problem, it's not a Windows problem, it's a hardware limitation.

Kathos ... 1 question and 1 piece of information ...

                  1) What is your native desktop resolution? 1400x900 or what? I may have ProQuake start up in a compatible X:Y ratio in the future due to your issue (and may add a command or diagnostic info saying what your native desktop resolution is).

                  2) I read this article on Windows 7 mouse acceleration:

                  ESR - Hardware Forum

I'll see what I can do to address the Windows 7 mouse issue in future releases, but I'll need others that actually have Win 7 to test.

Thanks for providing this information, as always I want ProQuake to work well for every one. Things like these problems you are having annoy me.

I returned the laptop, but I purchased another one running Win7, I will test Quake again once I have time. I will keep you posted with the bugs Baker.

From the posts, I don't think ProQuake is the source of the problems though. My mouse didn't seem to be "recognized" when I went in the settings, it just said optical mouse, no additional information. As for the black lines, it is because of the resolution, I will let you know how it goes with the new laptop.

Quick update: I ran quake on the new laptop, it runs nice and smooth, it no longer chops and the black vertical lines are gone. I haven't had time to play so I'm not sure if the mouse is still twitchy.

The other laptop was running ATI Radeon HD 4250, the new one has a GeForce if that helps.
