  • Preferred Mouse Type

I was wondering what mouse type people prefer for playing Quake.

Do you prefer optical, trackball or mechanical, and PS/2, USB or Serial?

    EDIT:

If it doesn't matter whether you use PS/2, USB or Serial, just vote for your choice in each, for example:

It makes no difference if the mouse is connected to USB or PS/2, they work both equal. As long as they are the same type (optical for example).

I wasn't sure because with PS/2 Keyboards, if you hold too many keys down at once it doesn't work, but it USB keyboards its fine, I didn't know if something similar happened with the mouse.

Thank you for clearing that up for me.

That's called ghosting, and even USB keyboards do that. This is actually a selling point for high-end gaming keyboards: "Anti-ghosting!! Press 11 keys at once!!". Typical every day, run of the mill USB keyboards still ghost.

Oh, I didn't know that USB keyboards did that as well.

                I think USB 2.0 has a speed of 480Mb a sec
I seriously doubt anything is faster except maybe firewire.
I don't think theres such a thing as a FW mouse.
I dont see anything faster than a laser either, so optical is the way to go.
some of the cheap ones use an LED system, make sure it has a real laser.
I find you can't beat the 10 dollar logitech for the money for gaming anyway.

USB 3.0 is here now though with 5Gb a sec

Unless you need 30 buttons for Quake then you need a $70 Logitech!

But ya Logitech knows what Quakers want.

Those are megabits, not megabytes. USB 2.0 is 60MB/s and 3.0 would be 625MB/s (divide megabits by 8 to get megabytes). That said, no mouse will ever need that much bandwidth. My mouse (Gigabyte GA-M8000) actually has RAM on it, but it's only 8KB... and it goes up to 4000DPI @ 1000Hz polling rate. That gives you a rough idea of how much bandwidth a mouse needs.

Didn't see USB Laser option is what I prefer. However out of choices - USB Optical. Hate PS2 mice as they are generally unprogrammable. They have mouse 1-3 but with USB mice you can get ones like this (which I intend to pick up for FPS gaming - NOT mmo as I hate them)

You can cat /dev/mouse on linux to see the data it sends. Even 1 mbit/sec would be overkill I guess.

eh i use a mouse i found at walmart for 30$ its a logitech wireless mouse.. it does good for rox not so much for shaft.. but it does what i need it to do.. and the batteries last for over a month without even needing to be replaced, thats more than i can say for most wireless gaming mouses

I thought that the USB Laser was the same as the USB Optical.

                              Is there a difference?
