  • Hi, I have pretty much always gone by the name Fr3aK and started in 96. I first played for the clan LOC if anyone remembers them and then moved on to LOA with l3ftism and others. I was always a HPB and one of the best i might add. I have taken a 6 years break and now im back with a low ping! now all I have to do is get good again.

    • Thank you.

Hi! Thanks for this forum and the enthusiasm for Quake one!

I started playing id games before Wolf3d, a game called Panjitsu I think. Loved Wolf3d, and the Dooms but when Quake Test came out I was ecstatic. Everything hinted at a great game to be released. I hung out in #quake on Undernet IRC most nights until release. I met DRiller on there, he lived not too far from me. Turns out he was Dave Riller, and he was one of only a handful of beta testers for Quake. We had a couple qtest lan get togethers and then when he got the .8 beta, Dave, Sage (from IRC) and myself all beta tested it. Well, we didn't find too many bugs but we did enjoy it! id also wanted our feedback on the game & if we liked it. We explicitly expressed that the multiplayer game was outstanding. Dave since has worked at Valve on Half Life 1 and 2 and I think still works there.

The three of us also went to the QuakeWorld release party in September 1996 in Manhattan. I still have some collectibles from it, including a huge Quake poster box that is about four feet tall. I'll take a pic and post here. I also have a unique t-shirt from it. I showed it to Todd Hollenshead at the 2006 QuakeCon and he was like "No one at id has that shirt man!"

After the quakeworld party, a few months later I ran some Quake servers (the bone(dot)uu-dot-net) servers, if you remember) for a lot of 1997 . We were just about the largest ISP in the world at that time, Worldcom had bought us. Anyway we had about 12 T3's into the building so I was the whore-est LPB at that time! I spent many a 13 hour days on weekends playing and even on weeknights I was playing for about six hours. I had no life but Quake was the shit.

When Q2 came out, I was very disappointed in the multiplayer game. It was not fast or responsive. The sounds sucked, the physics sucked, the game, just, sucked, IMO so I stuck with Quake1. After it came out I e-mailed JohnC and expressed my feelings that while the Q2 single player was probably better, that I would play it maybe 15 hours compared with easily hundreds or more hours of Q1. He wrote back agreeing that they had focused more on single player this time and that multiplayer was not as much of a focus. I asked him to focus on multiplayer IIRC.

I think *maybe* my e-mail might have helped him decide to focus on multiplayer for Q3 because soon after that he was interviewed saying that he really wanted to make a multiplayer game that people played for many many hours. (remember the recorded interview that was leaked? he was interviewed by a British man but the recording wasn't supposed to be released and id was upset about that)

In 1998 I didn't have broadband had only dialup so I didn't play much. 1999 I got a 6mb DSL connection and I was mostly on quake.erols.com which was a CTF server for a couple more years and I must say CTF is my favorite mod, follwed up by the CR type mods for team deathmatch. I don't like QW nearly as much as lanquake. Always felt QW's prediction was a hack, at best.

I just got the key combining movement issue solved here thanks to Baker. Thanks. For this year I've mostly been playing BF2142 and like it. Played all the BF series except Vietnam and liked them but no game since Quake has had that raw intense and humorous feeling for me. I expressed this at the 2006 quakecon to Tim Willits that the humor is what makes Quake so great. The sounds like the gulping, screams, etc all add something great. Tim explained that a lot of the humor was Sandy Peterson's contribution. Tim also explained that he cleaned up a lot of the DM levels and also that it was his idea to include them. He explained, to my surprise, that others at id thought the DM levels wouldn't be popular at all and that they were a waste of effort.

Back to Quake one .. One of the things I really like is grapple in CTF. The Q4 grapples in that mod (forget the name) are so slow and basically useless.

Anyway, not sure how much I'll play but I did some tonight and surprisingly I don't suck after a six or so year break. Sorry for my ramble. Little tiny part of quake history in there. I'll take a pic of the poster & shirt soon to post here in this thread or append to this post.

      Keep Quake alive!

      • I think the grappling hook was one of the best additions to Quake.

Urm, no offense but I have an excruciatingly hard time believing that one...

            • Hi, i'm new, I don't have Quake One yet but I plan on getting The Quake Collection(I,II,III), I have been longing to become a Quake fan for a while, but my old computer was just too horrible. I have played the Quake One single player and beaten it a while back, but had no internet at the time, I also have Quake II for the 64.

                • Just saying hello.

                  Hullo fellow Quakers!

A friend of mine recently released a Half-Life 1 map using textures from Kell's website (http.kell.leveldesign.org/). Upon completing it, I deduced that I had a rather great hunger for more Quake, so I wondered here nomad style.

My father bought Quake around the time it came out, and he introduced it to his wee lad, I've been playing off an on since.

This website is a blessing, uniting fans rather then leaving them scattered. Navigating while browsing the newest source ports, maps, servers, and enhancements is made easy. So it's worthy enough for me to stick around.

                  Long live Quake!

I remember playing a single game that you were in at Marlinspike in probably 1999. Why I remember this, I'm not sure. But I can clearly remember your profile page at http://quakefriends.8m.com/ and notice you are using that skin as your avatar ---- cool (I remember this because I thought that was the cool Quake pic ever at the time.)

Crazicracker still plays and many QCOD still are sighted on a regular basis. I think SirCamps is the most one, but Rugman is also seen with great frequency.

Oh yeah, I remember the LOA clan, we used to fight it out all the time.

In fact, I didn't have a permanent name until I had to register at a forum for the first time, which locked in my latest temporary name at the time. :d

                              • Hello

I've played for a while but hardly ever DM or COOP unless someone was in the same room (LAN, N64).

Much prefer SP, wanted to make maps for a long time, ended up making quite a few for Q2 which are all now, sadly, lost.

Released one map and one pack for Q1, find them at quaddicted or warp through Baker's EZInstaller. Warp Spasm the pack and Descent into the Maelstrom the map, though that was more of a tester / n00b map, for Nehahra.

Played most packs and maps out there, always loved the simplicity of Quake and what the community manages to get out of it.

Working on a E3 remake pack, though its very early days yet.

Good to see a player site like this and lots of people interested in this great game.
