Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm pleased to be here and to contribute by keeping a Q1 server alive.

Is your wife from Montreal (she looks like a girl I knew)? Do you speak French? Do you have children? How I never saw you on a server before?!?
Yes, the links to the pics are fine. No, my wife and I are from Hamilton, and I'm sorry to say we don't speak french. I have only 2 years of french from my high school days. It is barely enough to say: Alors, je ne parle pas beaucoup de français. So perhaps, I can go out in Montreal and order something to eat, and say thank-you. But that is about it. lol, I know, not a very good bilingual Canadian ...eh? No, we don't have any children ...yet. The reason you have not seen me on other servers is an easy one: I have rarely been on other servers. My Q1 pastime is just on my own server with friends, or at LAN parties some years ago.

Thanks. In fact, the server room is changing again, to include some more up-to-date gear. New pics to come soon.

Thanks very much for adding me and for keeping Q1 alive!

I will do that, thanks. In the last year or two, I seem to have a great deal more fun editting/updating the CTF servermods than I do actually playing the game. Go figure, heh (see below).

I'm glad to hear that the best of the best prefer the type of CTF I run on my server. I was always mildly displeased with the 3wave version as the hook was too "anti-real-physics". I tend to prefer the hook in the "old-school servermods" because it's more "real" (takes time to throw, takes time to get you there, you can swing on it).

A couple of friends of mine and I have been working to update the maps so that it's possible to have CTF on every original Q level, not just a small set of maps. If you log in to my server, you can already see several additional CTF versions for maps that never had CTF before. It's not complete yet, but it's coming along slow and steady. I intend to release those updates under GPL when they are completed. We have been revising each level to include the following features:
      - bases located fairly for both teams
      - at least 2 ways in/out of each base when the map permits
      - 8 starting spots for both teams in/near their base
      - a "balance of power" approach to "arsenal" weapons/armor in both bases
      - a "balance of power" approach to static/random items across map
      - when appropriate, initial trigger and opening of the "annoying" doors
      - when appropriate, blocking of short-cut routes or teleporters
These are, of course, all subject to opinion and we try to think them through logically and keep it fair for each side. The goal is to have a complete set of CTF maps with evenly matched environments for each side, and let player skill be the real competition.

As I mentioned earlier, I was doing some network upgrades, and have a couple of pics to show. Here are the before and after pics:
      Before:

      After:

Many thanks go to a customer of mine that gave me the new gear (their old gear) when they closed out their business to go on to new opportunities.

      Kind regards,
      Dark Helmet

        • Hello all. I go by lethlwipn. I have been playing Quake since it was released...1996 maybe, and have been playing multiplayer since it was affordable to purchase LAN equipment at the store...

I first played online at Heat.net.....it was a great gaming community. I met alot of friends and got in lots of trouble with the Wife for playing way too long and clogging the phoneline.

I play Steam games as well; CSS, Insurgency, TF2, HL2 Deathmatch. If any of you have Steam and wish to add me as a friend, my Steam account name is lethlwepn...feel free to add me.

Thanks rambo, I didn't know that. Oh well, sometimes reinventing the wheel can be fun. hehe. Do you have a link to the previously done version? It would be fun to mock up and see.

            • hello all!!!

I consider my self lucky to find this place!!!
Just this morning I was browsing the QRP to update my 2007 quake setup and wanting to find the difference between the normal and normalmap textures I came here following a link in QRP's site... since then I learned about the Reforge project, pretty water, parallax mapping, Seven's advices... now my quake game looks 100 times more advanced than before!!!
It is nice to see this community is alive and kicking!!!
thanks for all so far , I am here to stay!!!

ps. I still have a pentium200mmx machine next to my current one, I just love DOS games... still own and play in vga modes all the classics, from wolfenstein to Quake/DN3D
In time, Fire will fade ... and only Dark will remain

              • Hey everyone. I am new here obviously. I started with quake some time ago I think in 96, there was no single player in what I had, just multiplayer but idk if i am remembering that right, then I remember going through version .72 and .88, a .91 i think, and a patch to .92...then 1.0 and 1.01? lol so many changes. I joined clan Deimos and ran around a few years, playing all kinds of mods ctf and runes and all that until about 01-02 and fell out of it, found quake again just this week...amazing how much I've forgotten about this game! i started it up after downloading darkplaces, fteqw, high res textures, etc, and saw start map "quake" with the beautiful purple sky and the ambient looping wind ... i was like damn. im home. Then my wife was like what are you doing? and all of a sudden I wasn't in the 90s anymore lol

                -edit-

thanks to helpful member here, I found out it was not qtest, but a very early demo. hard to remember so long ago, but screenshots did the trick!

                • If it was only DM - you were taking part in Quake Test - I have a little mod (testing stages) out right now which includes QTest weapons in with the standard.
Then prior to retail Quake being released, there was a leaked Pre-Release Quake in which Vores threw lava balls and Chthon looked different - this sound familiar?

Welcome back to the Quake world. It's been alive and kicking still after all those years

                  • Can you message me on msn? It would be cool to discuss that mod. its been 15 years ago since that was going on, so some refreshing might help, oh btw im the guy that broke the clan deimos guestbook if you ever saw it lol.... if you ever went to clan deimos website when it was up from like 96 or 97 through 200x, i was the reason it looked so strange.

                        • Wow, some old names I have not heard in quite some time!

Anyhow, I'm DRE4D, and I have been involved with quake since the beginning.

I LANNED and stuff with my buddies for a bit, then about 97 or so I got 'quakespy' and the gaming world changed for me. Back then there WERE no other online FPS games, or many online games at all on a large scale. The playerbase was FRIKKIN HUMONGOUS and the very rare people that actually had high speed connections were widely regarded as cheaters. I hooked up with a couple of players randomly and we together started clan nicotine,( I was using the handles 'FUQ U' and 'MADBLUNTZ' back then) which was never super competitive but we boasted over 40 active players at our apex. I don't remember exactly how clan nicotine died, but it was sometime in 99. From there I bounced around some clan arena clans, pubbing, etc till 02 or so when I found IHOC. Fell in love with that mod and hung out with those guys until the game eventually died off..I'm not even sure when that was anymore. I know that in 03 'urban terror' came out as a q3 mod and many of the IHOC community went to it (myself included) and that was that. I haven't seriously played quake1 since, but to this day I have never had another gaming experience, all around, like quake1 game me.

It tickles me pink to see an active community all these years later.

                            • Hey all im Balious and I think I only played Quake 1 once in my life back as a child (nearly 20 now so a good 10+ years ago). I bought the ID Super Pack on steam mainly for Doom and Hexen and only just now realised Quake has just been sitting there the entire time and haven't touched it once. So I thought I change that from today and figured I find a forum to help me and be a part of. And so I ended up here
