    • This is my intro folks

Name's Dan, or damage_inc, or any other variations you feel like calling me! I answer to most anything.

A few weeks back I picked up that ole cardboard CD holder which houses my retail version of... you guessed it: Quake
      You KNOW the one

Anyways... WOW! Have the quake "community" made some much needed improvements to Quake original. I never cared much for single player gameplay, most ID games mind you, but I did go back and play both Mission Packs after downoading BOAT loads of enhancements It's been great fun with the right amount of tweaks.

And kinda difficult too!!! I use PinguyOS(Linux Distro) but can dual boot into Win7 if need be. I'm not a Linux guru in the slightest but damn... finally got DP and several other to load without booting into Win7.

      Most... of... the... time! LOL

Anyways, hope to see ya 'round the forums.

Oh yeah and... a big "shout out" and THANKS, to all you "crazy, losing sleep at night, ignoring all possible manner of responsibility" Quake modder out there!

      Cccccccccccccccccccccccccccya's - damage_
Name's damage_inc, and killing is my business. Don't worry though, it's nothing personal! Oh wait... maybe it is

        • Hi all,

Just registered here. Been a huge fan of Q1 for nearly ten years now. It's been a big influence on me in many ways. Only JUST got the expansions and enjoying them hugely [dunno how they got overlooked, but thank you, Steam sale]. Great start to 2013.

              • Sup everybody, I'm Jack

Quake 1 was the first FPS I had ever encountered, when i was just 6 (I'm 20 now). I moved on to Quake 2 and 3 a little bit after that and then moved onto more popular games with my friends. When Quake Live was created I immediately made an account and loved it, but remembered how mysterious and epic Quake 1 was about three years later, and here I am

I also play guitar in this band:

                  • Hello there!

I randomly decided to punch 'quake dmpc' into the search engine and found out a lot of my old buddies are hanging out here! I poked around in the forum for awhile and I was dissapointed to see that the death match plus thread was closed ... but it's awesome to see that so many people have fond memories of junker.org! I ran that system for a couple years with the DMPC. It was running in my basement, on one of the very first cable modem services available in the USA. If you ever logged on and were instantly fragged by a homing rocket, or the speed settings were all jacked up it was most likely my fault; I was a complete punk back then.

Anyway, a couple times I've tried to dig up the dmplus mod and bring back a server, but usually get stumped somewhere along the way. It looks like there's at least one dmplus enabled server at flanders so I might login over there sometime. I've also got the ability to spin up a server on a very solid connection now too.

I dug up some old photos ... a picture of quake.junker.org, and a screenshot for a leaderboard. Looks like a clan face-off between DMPC and AIC. Of course, I was the leader on it <g> must have been a hell of a match But Crunch, Stomper and Jimmy were all there .. not sure if Anthrax played for both DMPC and AIC. I should have caught a screenshot of some ping times back then too. I always had a ping of 0 since I played directly on junker, it certainly made some people jealous

Anyway, nice to see some familiar folks after all these years!

I'm just a noob that decided to play some old school quake one day. I'm not so great at FPS games in the first place, so I'll be getting killed left in right!

It's still fun though, I'll get better! I'll try to get some of my friends to join this community as well if they are interested. I'm an avid retro SEGA gamer and I hail from Sega-16.com, which is my "home" on the internet. check it out!

                        • (I don't think I ever did this, better late than never)

Hi, you can call me Gypsy or Michael. I don't really give a crap about Quake (meaning the actual original game), but I love being a part of this community and having front row seats to all the awesome stuff that these really talented people create.

I am primarily a (self-proclaimed) expert at puzzle solving. I apply that to everything in my life. It is generally applied most heavily to ripping apart computer languages. It is also applied heavily to filling in the blanks for partial information. That's what I do - dissect, reveal and remember.

I always have 3 or 4 projects going simultaneously and over the years my choice of projects has evolved from "one man jobs" to insanely complicated and generally considered unrealistic mega-jobs. For instance, I am currently working on a blogware-esque youTube that runs on a host.

I would say it is safe to assume that I am absolutely addicted to typing and I have been known to re-edit the same post a gazillion times until I feel I have said everything that I want to say, in an educated, accurate and slightly poetic manner (with plenty of bad grammar for color).

I have an absolutely nutty sense of humor and I was not blessed with a very good filter. So, I have been known to say things that kinda push the edge and create situations where I could be easily misunderstood (as a person). I assure you that I am simply a little crazy and I generally don't mean to offend anyone.

In closing, I have spent the majority of my time here, learning as much as I can from some of the most talented people this forum has to offer. I love sharing that knowledge, just like those that shared it with me. This knowledge spans QC, map building, modeling, skinning, conversions - lets just say it *covers everything except for some engine specifics.

*covers everything is to imply great familiarity, not ultimate knowledge

If you ever have a question on how to do anything mod related within first Quake, all you have to do is post your question and I guarantee you I will answer. I am not always 100% correct, but I am generally all over the/a correct answer.

That being said, whatever you do here, just make it count.

                          peace.

                          • Retro Gamer

Well, I've been "lurking" on Quake One for nearly a year, and finally registered and started posting in the forums. I picked up Quake last year in one of those crazy Steam sales, and I was not impressed with QuakeGL. So I looked on the Steam forums, and read about Darkplaces and some of the mods on Quake One. I've finally gotten around to putting together an eye-candy version of Quake (thanks to Smith for the huge head-start) so I can sit down and do a full playthrough of the ID1 levels and the expansion packs. Back in the old Quake days, I never did play more than the shareware episode.

I have a fairly long history of going back to old games and reviving them with source ports and mods. I'm not sure why, must be some kind of gamer's disease. Anyway, the first time was with Doom. I started with GLDoom (or something), and then found Doomsday. For many years I was active with Doomsday, even putting together high resolution texture packs (and created a high resolution texture pack for the Aliens TC for Doom). I tweaked out my jDoom configuration to the max, then moved onto jHeretic and jHexen. I played a ton of Doom and Heretic single player levels and mods with that setup, then finally moved on.

Next was Duke Nukem 3D, and Shadow Warrior. Again, I was active in the Duke 3D source port forum, and after assembling a great HD Duke 3D, played a bunch of single player campaigns (same for Shadow Warrior). I still play the original Unreal Tournament, but mostly single player episodes using the oldskool mod and high resolution textures, high poly models, and weapon mods. Did the same with the original Half-Life: enhanced the game with high poly model replacements and other tweaks and played through a huge number of user-made mods.

I also have bunch of old DOS games working in DOSbox, as well as a bunch of SCUMMVM games and MAME games. I guess I just have a lot of nostalgia for computer games and an interest in gaming history. I was playing pinball before video games arrived on the scene, and I'm a bit of a collector of pinball simulations (got plenty of Visual Pinball and Future Pinball tables).

I also like some newer games, I'm not just a retro gamer. But I guess I really like the user-generated content, and there's less of that with newer games. After a game has been around for a while, the user-made content typically peaks, and then drops off again. Doom and Quake are unique in that those games are still supported with a die-hard community.
