Why don't you guys just enforce everyone to use a particular client, take the CRC of the engine and the progs.dat file and check them when a client connects to a server? You have the source code, fuck sakes I will code this shit for you just pick a damn client you all agree on to use while playing and the official quakeC code you all want to use while playing. That should stop alot of his hijinks for a while, depends on how clever he is.

I am proposing a means to make it harder for him to cheat. The key is just preventing him from spoofing the validation code back to the server. That is how punkbuster and VAC work. It won't prevent all hacks but it will prevent him from using a client he has modified or using QuakeC code that isn't allowed on the server.

if he's using quakec on the server then logically its his server(or he's an admin) and by definition its allowed.

punkbuster doesn't need to comply with the gpl. you've no choice but to let him see/change/recompile it.

the alternative is to use user logins before *anyone* is allowed to play on the server, which is just nasty. Especially if you have to wait for an admin to authorise new logins - and if not then you're not really gained anything.

Here's what it is. No one really needs to cheat at a dead game. The only people that do are those who cheated in the past, and are now so entrenched in that that they cannot compete without doing that. These individuals still exist. They are the same scumbags that have always cheated. When someone is using a clearly modified PQ client it just screams cheats.
