  • Official Quake 1 Reboot\Sequel from id possible!

    I'm surprised this isn't front page news here. The article is called DeStroggified: Quake V Might Be Like Quake I. So they are at least considering doing a direct sequel or reboot to Quake 1 at last.

    "We think that would be a more interesting direction than doing more Strogg stuff after Quake 4… "

    Personally I like the idea of the "possibilities of going back to the bizarre, mixed up Cthulhu-ish Quake 1 world and rebooting that direction". As I like probably many of you are a long time Quake 1 fan.

            OHHHHHHHHH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

            Ok- there would still have to be a lot of things that id would need to do to make sure it's awesome:
            1- actually make it themselves- or, if they were definitely going to get a third party to handle it- make it GEARBOX or RITUAL (aka Hipnotic), or ask Kell, Necros, Hrimfaxi, JimmyT23 (and me) to do it. Raven have demonstrated twice that they simply should not be making sequels to id games (and I'm still waiting for a new Hexen title).

            2- Keep the dark Cthulhu-ish Axis-of-perdition theme; It's not a fantasy, and it's not a typical horror-sci-fi like Doom- but something take takes a lot of elements from both- and please god don't take any tips of Nehara- as far as I'm concerned, the mastermind behind the invasion is a sinister monster with advanced psychic powers to drive any living thing insane- it is NOT some emo-Underworld vampire micromanaging a few magical 14th century kingdoms. And I don't want to go visiting any more egyptian pyramids (like in expansion 2).

            3- Expand a little bit into new grounds- I normally don't credit modern games but Half-Life 2 and COD4/5 are excellent for drawing gameplay mechanics from. Some new AI allow stuff like running away from an enemy into a new room and having it actually try to find your hiding spot (as opposed to just getting stuck in a door)- it would really build up a survival-horror style.

              I liked wolfenstein 2009 here myself.... I don't see it as ruined or anything.

              But anyway what carmack was talking about a team inside id would work on it so you wouldn't have to worry about any third parties messing it up. First parties messing it up on the other hand.... and again to quote him:

              "possibilities of going back to the bizarre, mixed up Cthulhu-ish Quake 1 world and rebooting that direction"

              So #2 on your list is already a part of the proposed plan as well.

              And as for the third point I doubt they would just make a HRP for the old game and not update anything else they probably are mostly going to use the art style\story\atmosphere that is quake 1 style but incorperate new stuff they learned since then in regards to gameplay.

              However I think a problem it's going to have is a lot of people have a different idea of what quake is and what an update should be and the way id thinks it should be may not jive with what they think it should be so they'll end up hating it no matter what.

                That's an understatement!
                The expansions, mods and Doom3-based Quake TCs alone capture this interesting phenomenon perfectly!
                But- as he did say Cthulhu, I have my hopes back again!

                Gameplay-wise, it's interesting; although it definitely packs all the survival-horror potential, Quake 1 had the biggest fun-factor of any id game by having the most diverse combat spectrum of any game released; that being that every monster is completely different in how it fights, and I was effectively forced to change tactics for each monster in the situation- Quake 2, though good- I could take infinite potshots as they all attacked in a very similar manner (slowly aiming their guns and taking a blast).
                If they could mix it all together that would really be something!

                I think the only things left to hope for now are that id find a better way around the weapon duplication (multiple shotguns, machineguns, nailguns etc could be good if there were different models and you could pick and choose which ones suited you best- vs being stuck with 4 different guns with a double-barreled version).

                The other is they keep secret areas.

                Oh! MOST important; and this would probably be an id first; if they totally scrapped the puzzle bosses and had all bosses fightable. Dammit, I want to fight them this time- not figure out I'm supposed to teleport inside them when the extra-dimensional sea urchin passes through their bodies! Especially as Quake seems to have had the best ever boss fights! (Armagon and Quoth, anyway).

                  Excited and disappointed at the same time.
                  id has long forgotten the golden days of shooters. Honestly I wish they would drop themselves from doing it and pass it on to the devs that made PainKiller or Croteam (Serious Sam) - as those 2 know how to make a modern classic shooter.
                  Look at the bosses since after Quake 2 - all puzzle bosses really. Very few were the "gun them down" bosses.

                  However I don't see id tossing all the Quake things away. I do see them making remakes of the classic enemies. So in a modding sense we will have a nice base to build off of to make a Classic Quake mod.

                    Actually in a way if they intend to "reboot" Q1 I hope they do it this way:
                    Playing as a different character - "Wrack" perhaps and then have him go through the story. In D3 you got the PDA's - they could do the same and have things left by "Ranger"/QuakeGuy that states what he's doing/did.
                    This way it can be treated as a sequel or a reboot depending on how you look at it.

                        Actually Croteam once offered to do it one time and they passed saying they thought croteam was a one trick pony. The ones who made painkiller (people can fly) are also bought out by epic they where the ones who did the GoW PC port and then did Bulletstorm. So I don't think they'd do a partnership with id. The other company that was handling painkiller also recently went out of business (Jowood)

                        I'm willing to see what id would come up with if they go with this idea before judging it myself.

                            hmm, getting flashbacks from '96 again here duke3d vs. quake... fast forward fifteen years;
                            Duke Nukem Forever vs Quake 5... lets just hope they do a better job than DooM 3 eh? TURN THE LIGHTS ON!
                            still cant be worse than q4... raven should have stuck to sof or made a better sequel to heretic
                            LOL... poor old raven, poor old id and rip 3d realms... I feel old now...

                            but, I digress, It would be awesome to see a return to quake's roots...

                              I actually disagree with taking it to a bulletstorm/serious-sam type title; those games are good but they go too far in one specific style (mindless gunning in huge open areas); and I quite like the fact that Quake treads the line between heavy action and survival horror.
                              If Quake could give you a taste of each it would be fantastic (plus it helps keep the pacing going by having different situations)!
                              Having said that, considering they're working on Rage and Doom 4 next, we have plenty of time to assess their new approaches (as id are moving a little away from ultra-linear horror games and more into action).

                              Oh- one more major thing about the art style;
                              Doom3 moved in a direction of lots of skeletonesque, grim xenomorph Geiger-esque monsters;
                              These are good, but I hope they tone down on this in the Quake game a bit;
                              Seeing a skull-faced halloween monster just gets me go "Yep- bang"- it's so common I've practically de-sensitized to it entirely;

                              Instead it actually makes the monsters more unsettling that they're just so abstract; they look so unlike anything human and don't fit into a cookie-cutter 'horror' niche that they take you by surprise.
                              Take the shambler; he's arguably one of the most twisted, grotesque and frightening monsters ever in a game- and that's despite the fact that he's a big fat shaggy hairball (the hair would have to be mottled and disgusting to some extent- seeing a spring-chicken level of fluffiness might have a different effect on people).

                              Even little things like the bipedal enemies having completely inhuman body shapes and physiques (the shambler has no face, nor even a separate head, his paws are all thumbs (seriously check it out), and probably no terrestrial vertebrate skeleton for all we know; the Vore is a wiry lanky monster with a huge abdomen- shaped more like a spring-onion than a humanoid- and many of the enemies have odd-numbers of legs, no eyes, or a few eyes that might be more arachnid than mammal/herptile.
                              Stuff like that;
                              Watching a double-sized bodybuilder with an ugly face may be top-tier monsters in other titles- but in Quake, it's merely ogre-level!
