  • Help me configure Darkplaces!

So, from the steam users quake forum I downloaded their Steam Quake patch, which essentially replaces what Steam gives you when you buy Quake (GLQuake and Winquake) with Darkplaces. It also gives you the quake soundtrack which Darkplaces plays as you play (which is awesome; I've never played quake with the soundtrack before).

I then downloaded Seven's new particles and effectinfo.txt from here.

So, that leaves textures (I assume I should get Rygel's texture pack), models and HUD. So, where should I get all this stuff, and are there other things I should be doing?

    Thanks.

    Hello..

You can download Rygel's texture pack from here. There are two versions "high" and "ultra".
A recommend you Nahuel's csqc powered HUD, check it in this thread.
Regarding the models, there are a lot dude, I don't know what exactly do you want..

Ok, so I got the new lava textures and water textures, both look very nice.

      Couple questions:

      1. Is there a way to adjust the view blends, ie quadblend, pentblend, waterblend, ringblend, etc.?

      2. Is there a way to force which pk3 files get loaded last, or to specify which ones you want priority?

As an alternative, you could also use QRP's (Quake Revitalization Project) textures. Just like Rygel's, they are also very nice textures. A difference I noticed is that Rygel's textures are darker at the same settings. You could experiment which one you like best.

:: Quake Revitalization Project :: Downloads :: (The link is in the second post dated 24 december 2010. I downloaded the map textures v1.00)

If you use QRP, you would still need textures for other stuff like weapons and ammo. A favorite of mine is a pk3 file named "lostpack". I don't know anymore where I got it from but I'm loving it since I installed it.

Here's a link: (I scanned with AVG antivirus, you can scan it as well if you wish) Just place the pk3 in your ID1 folder together with QRP textures.

If you're using Rygel's textures, there should already be colored lights in the maps. (Not entirely sure) But if you're using QRP textures, you could add a file with colored lights in your ID1 folder. They really improve Quake a lot IMHO.

Maybe you've already have them but if you're looking for model textures I would recommend those from the Quake Reforged Project.

Look at the third download line on this page (Quake's bad guys), here you can download a "low", "medium or "high" quality version of the monster textures. Quake Reforged - Downloads

On this page you can see how each monster looks. (Click on a monster picture to see the "real" version) Quake Reforged - Bestiary

            Here's an example of a Shambler: http://quakeone.com/reforged/Bestiary/Shambler04.jpg

            ===

I'm not sure if you're also looking for sky (moving) textures. But I'm currently using two different ones (purple and yellow high resolution) (These skies are not mine! But at the moment I don't remember who made them. If someone knows please tell me) for two Quake versions. If you want to try them, place the texture file in the ID1 directory in the map textures. It should work that way. If you don't like them you can simply remove them and the game should use the standard sky again.

(If the sky moves too fast, you can adjust the speed under "customize effects" in the Options menu)

EDIT: Maybe you've already seen it. But on this page you'll find a lot more links with stuff to enhance Quake. http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-tal...-my-quake.html

I never recommend Rygels texture pack as it hasn't been updated in years. QRP is still active, so any issues that may arise from using their pack - actually has a chance of being updated - not to mention Moon and My-Key are great people themselves. Also they are presently working on the Mission Packs - something Rygel's pack doesn't (and never will) have. If you do decide to stick to Rygel's pack - do NOT download the Ultra, use High instead. Visually there's little difference too.

For the other content, that's mainly your decision. We have a Mod Releases forum filled with content. There's the best place to start.

What happened with Rygel? I noticed that he's registered here..
I'm using his texture pack, and it's awesome.. Maybe it wasn't updated in years but I absolute recommend it.. QRP's work is great too, hope the normal and gloss maps for MP1 can be released soon..

Judging by his website he moved on to other games and then just disappeared. Rygel's pack was great, used it for a long time. However due to the lack of updates - there wasn't any reason to keep it once I saw QRP's content. They have far better normal maps and if you report a bug to them - they take note it down and will likely fix it - as seen in their SoA texture thread with others reporting some bugs.

                    2. Is there a way to force which pk3 files get loaded last, or to specify which ones you want priority?
Yes, pk3's are executed alphabetically. So I will use this example:
                    You have Reforged's skins in a pk3 called: Reforged-Ultra.pk3
but you like Fragger's Enforcer skin more and it's in a pk3 called: Fragger-Enforcer.pk3
Reforged's will be executed after thus canceling Fraggers out. You could just simply rename the pk3 to zFragger-Enforcer.pk3
then it will be executed last overwriting Reforged's.

Keep in mind though content OUTSIDE pk3's will overwrite any pk3 content too. So if you want to have a file always used, you can always just extract it from the pk3

It looks like some of the lit files in the Rygel pack don't work all that great. For example, if you look at the megahealth in the outside area of DM3, it's all black. Once I removed the lit files (basically everything in Rygel's "maps" folder), it solved this problem.

I noticed in Rygel's "env" folder, it looks like there are new sky textures. How do I enable these in Darkplaces?

sup frenzy. It should be ok to go off topic, as I probably should limit myself to posting in the Darkplaces thread in the Quake Clients forum.
