We need more people to idle on servers!

okay so seems like there hasn't been too many games lately

i think if people could idle at whatever server they usually play at or where some other people are then we'd be able to get some more games going

i.e if you feel like playing and see no games are on, maybe you could just log on to the server and then alt-tab and go about your business, especially since quake doesn't take much cpu/network resources, and then check back once in a while to see if more people have joined

i'm sure a lot of people check the server list, see that it's empty and then go do something else

i don't mean log on all day and be idle either, but maybe around the time you feel like playing or whatever as it could help get more people together

you can also use the command "+jump" in console so you don't get kicked

I agree Retrocade. I do the same thing, as in check the servers through the site, see nobody playing, and keep doing my thing. So I'm guilty of that too, and I won't be able to change it for awhile as I'm busy with school and kind of taking a hiatus from Quake Multiplayer. But I DO AGREE, more idling will get more games! That's how we got Rage popular back in the day, and a LOT of 3wave going!

Code a server feature to broadcast fake names to the server browser to make it look busy; sv_fakematch 8

One thing to mention, with Qrack, if you idle on a server, READY up, then use cl_autofocus 1, you can alt tab back to your desktop and go on your marry way. If a match countdown begins, then autofocus will pull you back into the game before it starts... this works for CA, DM, and CTF servers.

Thats a well missed feature since I started using DirectQ. Although, I still connect + read up + alt tab else where, and just check back manually.

Also, playing in a fashion (if DM, play 5 minute games,so while you enjoy 2v2 it continually promotes people getting cycled into the game,rather than waiting).

Don't CC unannounced in CA servers, ask if people mind. Don't kick people for CCING without asking, then CC without asking yourself. It's really shitty

Play at Bomber.Quakeone.Com ,and use it as a warmup server for DM games.

the only problem i have with idling on a server is that the client doesn't auto pop back up when others arrive there. so they just leave after saying hey are you there? or other choice words.

this should be an option built in... that way its not annoying when you alt+tab for other stuff while afk. Like lets say checking choice of porn .com or quakeone.com where you wouldn't want to be interrupted while afk, but other times you could hit a switch or type a command in console that would unalt+tab or maximize/fullscreen quake up when people arrived on the server you are at if you are just sitting idle waiting on others.

Sure, I could add a third option cl_autofocus 2 which could re-focus the client when the message "has connected" is received. Another option would be to swap to windowed mode and just tuck it away in the corner...
