It appears that shmack has been saved!

If it gets paid, Slot shouldn't change anything. No need in over complicating things.

If anything, this should open Slot's eyes to the support from the RQ community!

Hell yeah, a few of us have been. The bill is %48 paid!

Vis maybe we should look into what will happen if this year gets paid, and next year we'll be in the same spot!

I just chipped in $20, but like I said - hdz can host these servers if needed.

$246 out of $504 raised so far. That's only 5 donations, and I haven't had the time to throw mine in yet either. This is going well. Whoever is donating, you are incredible people.

It comes to about $530 a year, dedicated hosting.

I've talked to Sole in PM about it, as I know he's talked to Slot-Zero, I haven't heard anything regarding a concrete decision?

I think the best option, really would be:

For HDz to host it out of Texas. I say this because HDz isn't going anywhere, plain and simple. As well, Texas is centralized.

If we (I say we meaning those of us who care, play there, or even have an opinion on the matter), just point the DNS to another server that somebody throws up, how long will that stay up? I myself have put up servers planning to keep them up for a long time, but inactivity on the server easily makes one rethink paying for something not being used.

HDz has shown concrete stability. Avalanche and Vis aren't gonna let the servers go anywhere. HDz's reputation is very good, and the servers are un-admin'd for the most part. On top of that, Zop is a key man in this I feel, as for future coding, I think he has every right to be a part of advancement if there is any, and Zop gets along with the HDz staff.

So does R00k, who is a very good admin (because he never admin's up!) But that's not why I mention him, he can code a sliding door over your asshole from a computer screen. This man's good. And when it comes to managing servers, Vis and R00k are my go-to guys.

Face it, these may not kill the community at all, but rebuild it. I haven't seen this many people want something from Quake in awhile. I think everybody should at least attempt to come together on this matter. Or give an opinion, what should come next?

One way or another, a solution is in order.

And peep this. On Rune Quake - A QuakeC Modification for Quake and Quakeworld there is a donation spot right on the front page, it's only like 18% paid, I pose a serious question when I ask, who will be willing to donate what?

I will start out with saying, not knowing if anybody else will help or not, that I will put down 100$ for this next year running, IF I get some words from some trustworthy peeps here that they will contribute as well and my $100 wouldn't go to waste.

That only leaves roughly $433 to get going. If we all just do what Slot has done for us, and give some donations, this conversation won't be in order until this time next year.

    UPDATE FROM SLOT
    posted on www.runequake.com

"Several people have reached out offering support to keep the servers alive. If you would like to make a donation, please click the ChipIn button on the bottom left of this page or the top right button on the forum. If the ChipIn goal is not met, a full refund will be made to each person who donated. For a direct link to the ChipIn page, click here."

Trinicom was closed long ago , just like when Hating tried closing its doors and then decided to re-open them, it was a complete failure.

jerking the rug out from the players feet, and expecting them to land on their feet, is a big tall order, especially when the rug is jerked out from under your feet, and there isn't a focal point like Quakeone.com to refer back to.

Trinicom is still up and running! Weird thing, though, it's not on the list of servers on the home page. No one is ever there

Sad, but true. This is one of the bigger reasons you don't see me online much anymore (for those of you who dare to point out that me, The Death Knight, the definative voice of Quakeone, doesn't know anything about Quake). I'm much too young and have much too much of an attention deficit to play the same thing every day. But, like I started out saying, it's sad, but true. If that's what the majority wants, let em have their fun...

...but please, o reaper of servers, don't take Shmack away from us! I'm flat broke at the moment, or I'd offer to front the money for it myself.

Popular fun mods that attract players are always important to the Quake 1 community. When Trinicom when down we lost 90% of the daily ctf activity.

With each door that closes another door should open. Slot covered the RuneQuake, CRMOD, RA sectors of the Quake Universe!

Any kind of community has new people....its a positive sign that what you are doing is attracting interest. If you cant respond to the interest in a positive way, theres some kind of conflict of interest going on. Then Id say make a private server somewhere and schedule regular times with those die hard players - no need to have it posted as a public server if new people who come in are going to be hassled. Yea the days of full servers are gone, so if you want to populate the servers again with real humans - not bots, like all the quake 3 ET servers have, you have to walk the walk and have some tolerance and patience. I get annoyed at this too sometimes, but the honor has been passed to us now and the younger crowd
looks up to the more experienced player as a role model. If they dont see any attraction in the character, they will simpley load up another game, theres tons of em out there now, and not a never ending supply of new people like there use to be.
We're not in the day and age where servers are real populated, which is the exact reason why newbs can't compete with better players. All the elite players ask is that the newbs practice a bit amongst newbs (ie. Shmack) and come back when they're half decent, or just tolerable.. you can't have guys with keyboard skills trying to play a game because it ruins it for good players..

Each game has it's own culture, like I said previously other games you can integrate newbs and skilled players because it's evened out across the board.. where as in Quake it would be like

    4 skilled vs 3 skilled + 1 newb = terrible and stacked

TDM is trying to facilitate having newer players for the most part.. and guys improved before playing the game, but you have to know the basics/fundamentals if you want to play.. otherwise it won't be fun for either party..

We used to play Erols CA in the old days with newbs and "pros" alike and it didn't matter no one cared.. but today the population is so scarce that in my opinion it only works in the way I mentioned.. become half decent with other newbs in a pub, then move your way up when you know some fundamentals otherwise you're just ruining it for good players.

What I say is definitely terrible and unfair to newbies who want to play the game with everyone else, sure, but this is Quake1 not COD.. 'fresh' blood is far and few at this point.. so you just have to accept the environment as is.. we've been trying to convince the group think that DM3 needs to be 'force warped' for years in a map rotation just like any other game but people voted against it. This is Quake, people want the same old and don't wish for changes at this point because it's a stagnant dead game as it is.
