I remember seeing someone had created a side-scrolling Quake? It had severe Mario Brother style appearances.

oh the 2d quake game? i think if you look into qexpo 2008 you can find it. Reminds me, I've been dying to do a pixeley de-make of quake in the style of a reverse donkey kong. Where the marine has to work his way down layer after layer chasing chthon who holds his friend's severed head hostage.

I remember also that thread that i guess you think of mindz. I've searched now the forum for about half an hour without getting the right thread. It was more looking like Duke Nukem Manhattan Project then Super Mario Brothers.

There was a game called QAKE, and it was right what you are seeking for. I can't find it in internets, but I may post torrent file here for you. It is free to download and use.
