Best things: friends, amazing people, learning stuff you never thought you'd know, open source, seeing surprising things people made, people stepping up to the plate to run servers or document something like modding tools, John Carmack (*), newer games try to imitate reality in their quest lack imagination usually and emulate reality poorly.

Worst things: People of questionable judgment, finding a zombie but don't have grenade launcher, people making mistakes they didn't know better, playing a custom map with the Europeans but have 200 ping.

/Had their been a poll ... people could have voted on something, heh.

John Carmack (*) - Getting deep into the Quake engine reveals many complex and innovative things and looking back at how quickly they would have had to have been implemented and the time frames -- amazing (QC compiler, map compilers, full 3D software rendering, networking, etc.). But what really sets him apart, is the open source part. Greedy, selfish bastards are common ... being the opposite is remarkable. Which is why everyone knows his name.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

edit: I didn't want you to be alone in your craziness so, I added a home link to my signature too

Only one thing that's good about Quake? Maan you're too harsh!

The level designs.....no! the open source...no! the multiplayer....no! the community...no! the perfect difficulty...

Name a thing that's bad about Quake...you now, i'm gonna be honest, i've been sitting on my chair for 7 minutes now thinking about what i don't like about Quake, and i can't find any! The game does what it does lol. But if i reallyyy want to be nitpicking, then i would say the shamblers! Sometimes i'm in a tough situation when facing those big marshmallows...

For me it came in the form of the competitive landscape.

There were many heart pounding moments where it came down the last second in terms of winning or losing a hard fought match. I think it's also cool to either see people develop over time into great players, or to face someone who is like minded and you appreciate their talent level because you can see the little nuances between you that other people wouldn't notice. One example for me was facing Wolv in the finals of the last CAX tournament before I left, I had a nice winning streak going against him in off-tournament 1v1s and he played me brilliantly when the chips were all in. He neutralized my RJ game by not utilizing his own RJ game and choosing to pick his spots/shots, it became much more of a technical match than a flashy one, and his aim is always impressive. I always felt he didn't have as much technical skill as natural skill before, but he proved me wrong in the finals with outstanding technical play. This is the kind of stuff that made it cool for me to keep playing, when you meet/play someone who is at a high level. I've enjoyed this versus various players both in CTF/CAX.

In terms of the bad (in the online realm), you have to put up with retards who are out to ruin the game. Which is a shame because the community is so small. You can understand there being trolls in a large community, since there is a high probability of that given the relative population. However, I think you'd be hard pressed to identify why this problem still exists in Quake today.

                Isn't this thread a dupe?

Anyway, from the perspective of a game designer:

+ a fun 90s game that's nice to play sometimes
                + getting into game design
+ some nice and knowledgeable people
+ some great tech like FTE, DirectQ and DP

                - looks deceptively easy to modify, but later you hit a brick wall
                - some childish or careless people
                - divided community, some narrow mindedness, some uncritical fanboyism
                - gives newcomers (both players and modders) a hard time
                - outdated, unmaintained tools and formats that nobody thinks are a problem
                - will end up an obscure niche thing for loonies unless problems get solved
