  • Oblige, do anyone tried it?

    Oblige, the description is:

OBLIGE is a random level generator for various classic games, including Quake, DOOM, DOOM II, and Heretic. The goal is to produce high quality levels which are fun to play.

I tried few maps with SMC on top and, while no-where nice as handwritten maps, I found it quite fun...

I hadn't heard of this until now, but it's super interesting! I think I'll give this a look soon.

        Hello,

I think an automated map-creating-machine will always be slightly 'buggy', but still well playable (as ezzetabi experienced).
Nevertheless, I think I will never be able to play one of these, as quaddicted´s archive is simply too big for me (aka a humans lifetime) to play through all of them

        But Thanks for mentioning.

I know there are talented mappers out there falling back in there chairs at this.

this is at most a tech demo, nothing more. It's just too random to be anything skillfully talented or useful. sorry.

id rather run around on a flat playing field with 'fog of war' and different textures on the floor to discern where i am.

I've tried ObHack, a modified version of Oblige, and tested it with Doom II. It works, but it's not really that great. Often exits are placed way too early and always the same stuff appears (boxes with enemies on them which sink into the ground when you come near to it for example). It's okay if you just want to play some more levels quickly, but you won't be satisfied in the long run. I didn't test it with Quake yet, but it'll probably be the same there.

So ye, making maps yourself is more fun, but it takes more time of course. I need a week for one map alone, while Oblige/Obhack make 30 maps in 2 minutes.

Does oblige spit out a .map file or .bsp file? If it spits out the .map it might not be a bad deal to make a set of random maps, find one that has at least a few good rooms and layout, then use that as a "base mesh" for a handmade map.

edit: Why is "Snoop Lion" wearing a hat that is targeted to little girls? That is a fully grown man. Is he such a complete sellout that he has to take part in every fad, even if it makes him look like a complete idiot?

"Hey everybody, I'm platinum artist Snoop Lion and if that's not enough I wear accessories for little girls too. I'll have all you morons wearing this shit, soon enough."

                    sad.

mg: direct to bsp. that's what makes its bugs quite so fatal. on the plus side, its easier to generate an entire episode at once.

direct to BSP... that's garbage. They dropped the ball on that one. If they would have went direct to map their app would be more useful. I could see a direct to .map random map generator being a kickstart for new mappers.

Generate 10 or 20, check em out and hopefully have a decent base to start from in at least one of them.

Your an expert Spike, how hard would it be to tweak it to spit out .maps instead. I'm sure it's programmed in some kind of C so it is out of my heat range but, I'm still curious how hard it would be.

just spit out a doom wad and convert that to quake instead? :s

generating convex brushes can be very different from generating arbitrary walls. going from brushes->walls is easy enough, but going from walls->brushes is a nightmare.

thats not really what i meant. i meant never build the walls to begin with. basically completely strip the BSP portion of the generator and swap it with a .map one.

@just spit out a doom wad and convert that to quake instead? :s

I didn't get that joke but, I'm sure it's funny.

its not really a joke, but it is slightly flawed (due to different entities). You would at least be able to get a .map that way, but you'll likely be stuck with bad textures too.
