  • Shrak for Quake

    Hi there,
I know, its my 1st post and I should maybe start with something different but, ok, I am too curious not to ask straight away:

Did anyone ever play Quantum Axcess' Shrak for Quake?
I just stumbled about it in google and had never before heard of it...
    Any opinions/experiences?

CheapAlert is a mod master (and developer) and knows/has played just about everything. I haven't heard of the mod myself.

There are a lot of excellent maps and mods for Quake, one source being the QuakeTerminus mod list that has ratings and screenshots:

      http://www.quaketerminus.com/addon.htm

For things that aren't total conversions, you might check out:

      ... if you haven't already.

I am sorry for just rushing in. here is my official hello to quakeone.com.
Anyway, thanks for the answers. In the past I played a lot quake stuff (the official missionpacks, Malice and many more) therefore, I was astonished to hear from `shrak`the first time...

Well, one of the things I really wished happened in 2005 was Quake System 4, a project by Phait that he decided he couldn't complete.

The video promo he made for System 4 was so cool. Too bad it won't happen.

too bad phait's one of those emo modders who wish to go away for like 2 years after popping in for a week.
He never completed his mod in 2004 either

If you want some cool sci-fi like Quake episodes to play, the two --- and I know I can't shut up about one of these --- that I absolutely think is awesome are:

                1. Lunaran SP1.

                http://www.lunaran.com/maps.php?map=lunsp1

The ultimate sadistic high-tech Quake 3-looking level. Big map, 199 monsters on hard, but the addictive thing is the maddening frustration of being able to see where you want to go, but having a fitful time finding exactly how you get there.

Plus, it has some bad custom evil guys. 2 types of special beefed up Enforcers and axe men.

                2. Starship 1 and maybe 2

                http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/u...d/starship.zip
                http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/underworld/moon.zip

The play of those maps is about the usual. The craftsman ship is amazing and even more of a shocker is that it is circa 1997.

One of the 2 guys that made it ended up later being a very successful Half-life modder (or something like that) and has his own gaming company.

The ones you probably have already played:

                    1. Marcher Fortress (I have not ever completed this to the end, it's hard)

                    2. Castle of Dark Ages (I have not ever completed this to the end, it's hard)

The ones you maybe haven't played:

                    1. The Middle Evil

This map is incredibly difficult. After several attempts, I decided to cheat. I would stop playing this map because it was scary, heh. Only map I've ever played that I felt like I had to skulk around in fear.

                    http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames2/l...m-o/middle.zip

                    2. Castle of Koohoo

Simply amazing. Not so many monsters, massive map and very enjoyable.

                    http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/p...aps/koohoo.zip

                    3. Once Upon Atrocity

The best. I don't want to ruin it, but there are both white and black shamblers and fire shamblers and other interesting things. The one weakness is that I accidentally discovered a secret you aren't supposed to figure out and I can't keep that out of my mind.

                    http://www.planetquake.com/underworl...html#2ndreview

                    4. Tale of Abbott's Rune

When you finish this one, you feel like you accomplished something. And what's super weird, is somehow the author made this map without any QuakeC and that it was made in 1997 or so. This is a very compelling map and the ending is suprising.

hopefully i don't get penalized for bringing up such an old post, but i thought it would be pertinent to throw in my 2 cents on shrak. i remember buying this game specifically for the contest they were having (amazingly, their website is still up and you can read the may 15, 1997 post on this page: http://www.shrak.com/shraknews.html ). i never did find the level--even using noclip--but overall the whole thing was really craptactular. after the contest ended and i lost and was brokenhearted, i sold the thing to a local games shop for about 1/4 what i paid and said goodbye forever.

Dear god that page takes me back... ..Yeah, Shrak was rather crappy most of the time, and at best, uniquely awkward... I mostly remember a clumsy two headed enemy, weird texture choices on func_trains and a very obese boss...

I never recall hearing a word of a secret level.... ....man now my mind is hearkening back to the day when PlanetQuake hadn't destroyed a hefty chunk of the Quake community and pushed it to the side to prevent growth so they could strengthen their brand through popularity...

Suddenly I miss Fragmaster, running into Zoid on the MOTW servers, and the shugashack with the QW craziness... *sighs*
