  • Ignore User feature

As we sadly seem to have been overrun with the scurge of spammers here on good old QuakeOne.com and unfortunately nothing appears to have been done about them, I wonder if the individual ignore List feature might help the QuakOne.com community? If you go to your User settings, select the account tab, and scroll right down to the bottom you should see an Ignore List section. If you type the name of the spammers in there seperated by spaces and then save the changes the corresponding postings magically disappear. I know it's not ideal as it appears to leave the offending thread behind (just without their post), but in the absence of any other solutions it might make QuakeOne (a little) less painful to visit.

With the above in mind, and just in case others may wish to get a head start with a list of spammers you can cut and paste in to your ignore list, it's goodbye and farewell to the following 85+ spam happy members...

On a totally unrelated note, you said rocket jumping was different in a certain engine. I had to do some thinking.

Here is the answer --- it defaults to FitzQuake "full pitch" (pretty much the same as cl_fullpitch 1 in ProQuake). So if you want ProQuake style feel do:
    "cl_minpitch -70; cl_maxpitch 80" in an autoexec.cfg.

Thanks Baker, I hope you haven't expended too much time and energy on that as it was only a minor point. but thank you for coming back to me

Re Spammers: I did pm Sole in case I could do something to help eliminate/reduce the impact of spammers, but alas he never got back to me so I will assume he has it in hand.

      Kind regards
      Monty.

It made me have to think because I knew you knew what you were talking about.

its at least better than nothing. it at least stops the threads by already-existing spam-bots from showing up in recent posts
          .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
          > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

Thanks Talisa. If it helps others I will try and continue to update the list in the first post with spammers as I find them so that it can be cut and pasted as required.
I do hope I'm not flogging a dead horse here but I assume the mighty Sole is the only person with the access to handle these individuals so you never know he might find a minute or two and take pity on the remaining members and see his way clear to just cutting these individuals off at the knees by banning them. Let's hope so

I wish there was an ignore-by-word filter. It would be real simple ~ "essay" ... done.

It's kind of strange that this site is being inundated with spam about essays (of all things) and I haven't seen this essay spam anywhere else.

It's also pretty sad there is any spam in the first place. I crushed all spam from day one on NextGenQuake.com with completely free software. This vBulletin shit is not free yet, it seems to be a spammers delight.

                Hi MG,
Yes, to be honest I was sorry to see the NGQ site go as it was well designed, creative and showed a lot of promise IMHO, but what's done is done I suppose.
It looks as though Sole's last visit was 04-02-2018 (I'm assuming 4th Feb?) so I hope he's okay and hasn't gone for good. If there are no other Admins then perhaps now would be a good time to start backing up some of the key threads (SMC, Talisa's Stuff, SP Map Textures, Engines, key info), from QuakeOne.com just in case the prospects are are not good.

                Kind regards

I wasn't sad to see NGQ go. I worked my ass off, gave quake users/modders/etc a gazillion features to express themself and their work, while also providing a growing compendium of all the stuff available. All that combined with the fact that I actually finished something ... and basically nobody used it.

The whole site (everything) is still there in full. All I have to do is change index.php to the original version and it all comes back. I highly doubt I will ever do that though. On November something the whole domain will disappear from the internet and that will be the end of that.

                    Hi MG,
I can understand your point and how you must feel. To be honest I suspect many people didn't even hear about the NextGenQuake site until it was too late. I only heard about it in-game from someone who has quite a dubious past when it comes to Quake webites which is why I contacted you to determine its validity. Oddly enough I was trying to pluck up the courage to ask you if you would mind if I could use a small part of it as a kind of update point for my little self-educational Game project but you canned it just before I was going to speak to you. Doh! Oh well, just my luck hehehe . Unfortunately Quakeone isn't as easy to use as it once was, and somewhat overrun with spam so maybe I'll look at some other means of sharing for those crazy enough to show some interest.

                    Kind regards

@I'll look at some other means of sharing for those crazy enough to show some interest.

Buy a domain and give me access long enough to install NGQ on it. I would do that for you and very few others if that was something you were interested in.

I don't want to run it, maintain it or be involved above member level but I'll install it, clean up any spammish posts I left in while developing and be available to answer any questions while you familiarize yourself with the features. The choice is all yours and my feelings won't be hurt at all if you don't want it.

Come November this offer dies. There is 1 copy of my site. On November 16th the domain dies and the one and only copy of my source dies with it. Of course I could make another copy before that time but, I won't.

Actually, the funny thing is that there is only one page in the entire source that matters. I'm no dummy. I made ZERO changes to the entire codebase. The one and only script that matters is my stylesheet. Technically, I could remake NGQ from the ground up in just a couple of hours of installing and configuring plug-ins ... dump in my stylesheet ... voila, NGQ. However to have to rewrite the stylesheet would take a week. Pinpointing each element for a CSS overwrite is VERY time consuming and tedious.

NGQ was just stock WordPress + plug-ins + over 1000 lines of CSS overwrites.

Thanks for the kind offer MG, it's genuinely appreciated especially as I know you put a lot of passion in to it. I'm pretty snowed with numerous RL issues, and associated costs at the moment which have hit me out of the blue and are acting like a sponge on my time (hell I haven't even played a decent game of quake in weeks ) but if I can resolve them and get them out of my way then hopefully I'll see what I can do and be in touch

                        Thanks again.

How much would a domain cost? I'd be down to throw some money in to see this occur even if just out of curiosity as to what this site was/is

Domains are anywhere from free to really cheap ($40ish a year) to unrealistically expensive (come up with a stupid price, somebody is trying to charge it).

NGQ is currently sitting on one.com @ about $40 a year. I would pay another year and GIVE you the domain if it was possible to do so without practically handing you my identity. It was never about the money. If I was going to hand anybody my identity you (Mr Burns) might be one of the few people in this world that I actually believe wouldn't do something nefarious with it but, obviously, I'm never going to take a risk like that.

I can give you money though and you just pay it back some time before the end of your/the world. Or don't pay it back. Everything always works out for me so, I'm not too concerned one way or another.

Well I'm more than happy to pay half in to keep it operating, Mr.Burns how would you feel about us splitting the cost down the middle? If not I can probably just pay the full amount some time next month so it's up to you.
