This guide offers all the steps to make the best Quake as possible optimized for ours projects, and get the best of this extraordinary game.

Follow a series of recommendations directed mainly to two graphics engines, Darkplaces, Qrack, etc...
From graphics to sound, from music to textures, from skins to models, from the .shader .config and much more

Note: Remember that these instructions are always personal considerations, and different systems may give different results. If anyone has tips or considerations please contact me by email (reforged at hotmail dot com).

Quake Darkplaces

Official Site & Download
from icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces

Dowload the file .rar and extarct into "c:\quake\" folder.

"DarkPlaces is a Quake modification. I have built over the course of 6 years on and off experimenting, it got somewhat of an overhaul when the Quake engine source code was released, and I began developing a custom OpenGL-only engine for it and other mods, which supports Windows WGL and Linux GLX, and has greatly improved graphics and image quality."
continue to official site...

Darkplaces is the engine that we recommend for our projects, with support for various features that make our work much better. Normal map, gloss map, luma map, offsetmapping, reliefmapping, support our shades etcetera ...

Settings optimizations:

This is the setting recommended by rygel, one of the developers of textures:

remember to create a file called autoexec.cfg (put into c:\quake\id1\), containing for example this information:

r_glsl 1
r_glsl_offsetmapping "1"
r_glsl_offsetmapping_reliefmapping "0"
r_glsl_offsetmapping_scale "0.05"
gl_picmip "0"

Change settings depending on how you want to get the result;

LIT FILES FOR ID1, SCOURGE OF ARMAGON, DISSOLUTION OF ETERNITY AND ALL MODS.
This pack contains a program to update LIT files for use with the *original* Quake game from ID software. These contain
coloured light information to enable most modified Quake engines to display the classic Quake levels with
coloured lighting. THIS VERSION OF THE PACK SUPERSEDES ALL PRIOR VERSIONS AS OF FRIDAY 15TH MAY 2009:
To create the files. Lit you have to decompress the file. "Zip", start WinMHColour.exe, select the folder containing the file. ".pak" of Quake, or expansions, press "addpack" and finally "light BSP (s ). Place the files in the folder you just created maps.

World Textures

For Quake Base Game: As written on the site darkplaces we recommend using these textures:
Quake Retexture/Remodel Project (maintained by Up2nOgOoD[ROCK] as primarily a QuakeWorld content replacement project, difficult to install on DarkPlaces, formerly known as the QE1M1/QE1 project made famous by Tenebrae).

Official Site & Download
from facelift.quakedev.com

Dowload the file .rar and extarct into "c:\quake\id1\" folder

Otherwise another excellent project it's Rygel-dp-texturepack (http://www.repage8.de/member/rygel), present in various versions: ultimate, tiny, small, high and ultra.

Download Ultimate Version(128x128x8bit)
from shub-hub.com
Download Tiny Version(128x128x24bit)
from shub-hub.com
Download Small Version(256x256x24bit)

Download High Version
(512x512x24bit)
from games.on.net
Download Ultra Version (3 parts) (1024x1024x24bit)
from games.on.net

Alternative: now there is "Quake Revitalizations Project"

For Quake Expansions (Scourge of Armagon, Dissolution of Eternity): Of course our project "Quake Reforged: The textures" the only one who knows.

Official Sections Site
from http://quakeone.com/reforged/

Dowload the file .rar and extarct into "c:\quake\hipnotic\" folder for Scourge Of Armagon and "c:\quake\rogue\" folder for Dissoltion of Eternity.

Skins (Monsters & Models)

For Quake Base Game: Of course we recommend our skins for the monsters, in 4 different versions, Low, Normal, High & Ultra for Monsters (Quake Reforged: The Bestiary) and wepons/items/power-ups of expansions (Quake Reforged: The armory).
Regarding skins of items for quake base game are already contained inside Rygel-dp-texturepack, inclusive of models and effects. Otherwise visit http://members.optusnet.com.au/plaguespak~/ to see more.

For Quake Expansions (Scourge of Armagon, Dissolution of Eternity): Of course we recommend our skins for the monsters, in 4 different versions, Low, Normal, High & Ultra for Monsters (Quake Reforged: The Bestiary) and wepons/items/power-ups of expansions (Quake Reforged: The armory).

To install just unzip the files in the folder c:\quake\id\progs when applied to the quake base game, or inside the folder "progs" of expansions or mods.
In darkplaces the name must be "X.mdl_0.tga" where "X" is the name of the enemy or item.

Models

For new models in Quake, except those contained within the rygel-dp-texturepack and those contained in our project for the expansion, I suggest you visit the site http://facelift.quakedev.com/remodel/, "Quake remodeling project, "or http://gfx.quakeworld.nu/browse/models/ properly set.

To install just unzip the files in the folder c:\quake\id\progs when applied to the quake base game, or inside the folder "progs" of expansions or mods.

Note: In some cases the models into the rygel-dp-texturepack not rotate in darkplaces. To restore the original Quake models, erase the files inside the folder "progs" of the .pk3 of Rygel (using winrar) weapons and power ups in question such as b_g_key.mdl etc.

Note: In some cases it happens that in darkplaces not see the torch. To solve this problem just download this small mod for Quake based game:

Sound & Music

To replace the sounds in Quake with the modern interpretations, I recommend you try MINDGRID: AUDIO, at http://www.mindabuse.com/mindgrid/audio/quake/ the site and download the attached file.
The installation is in the form of an original QUAKE .PAK file. Drop the PAK in your 'id1' directory as pak2.pak to override any audio being loaded from the original QUAKE game assets. If there are other PAK's located in the main id1 directory, you will want to rename this pak to be sequentially loaded last -- meaning set it to the highest number.

Otherwise you can try the Quake Sound Resampling Project, an upgrade that converts the audio sampling. There are two versions to choose from the package.
"The larger of the two paks is basically ALL the wavs from the registered version of Quake, resampled to 44.1KHz 16bit samples.
The smaller of the two paks contains certain HIGHER DEFINITION wavs (some at 22KHz, some at 44KHz and some at 16bit definition) from the Quake1 test released by Id months before the demo and final version of the game appeared - i have resampled all of them to run at 44.1KHz. "
For download ask in the forum quakeone.com/forums.

Personally I think the music in Quake is a very important component, it makes the game more vivid and intense. To hear the original tracks is enough to turn them into mp3 through a program like CDex in .ogg, and place them in the folder c:\quake\id1\sound\music\, such as:

c:/quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track02.ogg
c:/quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track03.ogg
c:/quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track04.ogg
c:/quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track05.ogg
c:/quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track06.ogg
c:/quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track07.ogg
c:/quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track08.ogg
c:/quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track09.ogg
c:/quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track10.ogg
c:/quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track11.ogg

Best Mods

I mentioned in this list only some of the mods I prefer for Darkplaces.. If anyone has any to add just send me an email.
I apologize to the creators of some mods that I have not listed.

"Darkplaces supports this other games/mods:

  • Quake : -quake, this is active by default, gamedirs: id1
  • Quake: Scourge of Armagon : -hipnotic or hipnotic in executable name or path, gamedirs: hipnotic, id1
  • Quake: Dissolution of Eternity : -rogue or rogue in executable name or path, gamedirs: rogue, id1
  • Nexuiz : -nexuiz or nexuiz in executable name or path, gamedirs: data
  • Nehahra : -nehahra or nehahra in executable name or path, gamedirs: nehahra, id1
  • GoodVsBad2 : -goodvsbad2 or gvb2 in executable name or path, gamedirs: rts
  • BattleMech : -battlemech or battlemech in executable name or path, gamedirs: base
  • PrydonGate : -prydon or prydon in executable name or path, gamedirs: prydon"

DPMOD:

One of the best-supported model darkplaces is Dpmod, an extension made by the same creator of DP, with many new and interesting features, including multiplayer.

KLESHIK MOD:

"Kleshik is an unfortunately little known co-op mod by Dresk for DarkPlaces exclusively. Some may scoff at the exclusivity as a pitfall of platforming and niche filling, but it truly takes advantage of many of DarkPlace's features to create a more visceral experience, with a great sense of feedback, and substantial weight and impact in the world of Quake. Kleshik does a good job of allowing the player to hold back if they really wish to, but without a sense of ease, and does a better job of getting the blood pumping, and all the more primed for fear. It approaches that odd combination of horror and intense action; where most games and mods go for suspense, inaction and quiet, Kleshik besieges you with events and atmosphere. Where most horror elements are visions of the tomb, Kleshik is an image of chaotic Hell, given voice. "

QUOTH:

"Quoth is an expansion pack for Quake 1 single player."
"The intention behind Quoth is to provide a large portion of content in as easily accessible form as possible for both players and mappers. The components are designed to be consistent with the original id content as well as each other. More is under development and updates will be released as and when they are ready. Yes we are mad, but ours is a madness brought on by divining the blasphemous truths of a terrible cosmos. Or something. "

QUAKE C PROJECTS:

"QuakeC is an interpreted language developed in 1996 by John Carmack of id Software to program parts of the computer game Quake. Using QuakeC, a programmer is able to customize Quake to great extents by adding weapons, changing game logic and physics, and programming complex scenarios. It can be used to control many aspects of the game itself, such as parts of the AI, triggers, or changes in the level. id Tech 1 was the only game engine to use QuakeC. Following engines used C, and beginning with id Tech 4, C++."
Try to see at http://www.fileaholic.com/idgames.d/quake/quakec/ for some old original quake c module.
