    Qonquer Map Jam



    The crew at func_msgboard finished a map pack for the Qonquer mod.
    If you're not familiar, it is a mod that pits the player against waves of monsters
    in an arena. I have played it and it is heaps of fun. Eight maps!

    Tyrutils update



    ericw is continuing the overhaul of the Quake map compilers.
    One new feature is surface lights (shown above, screenshot posted by func_ member WarrenM.)
    Another is that so-called "fence textures" now cast shadows - imagine a grate over lava creating
    spooky shadows, almost like something from Doom 3. These are absolutely bonkers new features
    and (together with the ambient occlusion and the crazy new sunlight features)
    Quake mapping will probably be changed forever.

    Recent malware issue

    There was some malicious code planted on the site a while back, but the problem has been solved.
    If your browser displays quakeone.com as a problematic site still, rest assured it is no longer a problem.


    Personal issue

    I've had a shoulder injury which prevented me from doing much of anything.
    I'm sorry you had to live with a delay in your Quakeone.com news.

    Now that's a hefty amount of news! I tried out Map Jam 5 this morning, and it's pretty based. I'll probably try it out coop later, as I imagine that it's supported. If not, I can always do what Carmack did for Quake 2's coop spawns.
    Quake is for nerds.

      Good news dump. :-)

      An additional tip here for anyone trying out the Qonquer pack: one of the guys at func_msgboard (Scampie) has provided a tweaked version of the Qonquer mod that speeds up the enemy progression so the waves get more interesting more quickly. It also fixes a bug w/ weapon cycling: http://scampie.net/files/QuickerQonquer.zip

      If you want to get the fixed/changed behaviors from that mod into jam 5, all you need is to copy the new progs.dat into your jam 5 folder.

      Another Qonquer-jam-related comment. IMO if you want to see the best gameplay in the pack, then try the maps by FifthElephant and Scampie first. Scampie's is a multi-arena map -- arena 1 is the standout, actually the best arena in the pack overall, although his arena 3 is definitely worth a play in its own weird way.

      Since Qonquer maps are arenas, you can quickly see what a map has to offer, so all the others are still worth a look too. Some great Quake architecture, and they're all fun for at least a few Qonquer rounds.
