I like the games available on Steam.

It's just the Steam program itself that I don't exactly enjoy.

Yeah thats one point. I got some old Pcs @home for LANPartys- HL1 and CSClassic ran fine-until steam came...
The Steam process eats more RAM and CPU than the game itself-steam rendered the old games unplayable! ARG
And before playing I had to establish a Internet connection in my LANRoom, cos Offline mode doesnt work-well sometimes, but with a-100%-safety it doesnt work when you sit there with your friends in front of the PCs and want to play.
So, the only way was to install the old pre-steam version ARG You might still remember some issues with CS 1.5, like the mouse pointer always-staying-on-top-until-restart or other ugly things.
HL1 is and was so old and outdated, unbelievable.
Valve should have hired Lord Havoc to update their engine, really

It's obvious you don't have enough memory but perhaps it's also because your graphics card can't handle hl2
