  • Herro, I'm Seekay (duh!).

I know it may sound weird, but I actually started playing Quake.... just two months ago. Not because I didn't know it or because I was some Modern Military Shooter peasant, but because Quake and many other games by id got banned here in Germany. It still is, which is weird considering that Doom got free of the ban not too long ago and a lot more games with a lot more violence got released uncut with USK 16 and 18. You can't get it on id's website or Steam either, thanks to outdated German laws.

So, you may wonder how I got it. There were two options - the lazy and bad one, or the smart and good one. I was lazy and bad and pirated it. But considering how old the game it is, I don't think id would mind at that point. Before I got Quake, I had the chance to get at least some taste of Quake with Valve's Deathmatch Classic, and I absolutely loved that game. It obviously plays different than the original Quake, but it's still amazing and has that Quake feel to it. And there are even some people playing it to this day!

I decided to get DarkPlaces and played through the Single Player. I have missed out on so, so, much. It's really an amazing example of what today's FPS is lacking. Rocketjumping, strafejumping, searching for keys and buttons to open doors, secrets with useful items, using different weapons for different enemies, running and jumping around to avoid getting hit, having to manage ammo, healthkits, armor and other special items like Quad-Damage, trying out all sorts of different strategies, mod support.. just gotta love it.

I got Jackhammer and now learn how to make maps. It's easier than mapping for Half-Life, but I'm still a bad artist and mostly use the same ugly textures and make blocky rooms all the time , but at least I'm having a hell lot of fun.

The website isn't really new to me, but I never thought about making an account until now. I'm glad this site exists, it really helped me a lot making playing Quake easier. It's thanks to you guys that I found other engines, mods, HD soundtracks, and useful tips and advises. You guys rock!

    Thank you for reading.

        • Greetings! I am Reaku the Crate, or just Reaku, I have enjoyed playing Quake since I was a small child, and I still have my old folding case, with the disk in working condition. that said, lately I've been getting more into the game, after I spent literally 8 years playing and modding Doom, only to find disappointment in the end. Near the end of that, I had attempted to make maps for the Xonotic, but my computer wasn't up to the task of compiling even the smallest of maps, now with my new machine which is at least 2 years old now, I'm able to make maps again, after a long time waiting.

I am fairly new to mapping for Quake, as I only have beginners knowledge of 3D map editors, but I do hope to start making maps for peoples enjoyment!

You might wanna get that idea out of your head for now. :3

It takes years to master level designing. I consider myself a beginner, but I'm making maps for Valve's games for years now. I only started making maps for Quake and Doom since a couple of months, but thanks to the experiences I gained from Half-Life, it was pretty easy to get used to mapping for Quake (and Doom too, although a different map editor is used for that). But my maps still lack a lot of quality. As in, I usually make very dull looking maps. Bad texture choice, inefficient ways of solving things, unlogical designed rooms, etc... and that for years!

So yeah, you might wanna let friends test your maps, but don't expect yourself to become a mapping elite anytime soon

I know I've got a long way to go, considering I'm having to get the symmetry complex out of my head so my stuff isn't mirrored all the time, that was a growing problem I was facing when mapping for Doom in the last 3 years of it, I was losing ideas fast. I can make the maps, it's just as far as getting the inspiration to come and stick, also knowing most of what I used to make was Deathmatch, I'm going to have to spend time anyways, since I haven't actually made a successful map using a 3d editor yet.
I have the sense of style when making a map, so I can make it look good, it's all down to making a map that will function without being a mess, or too cramped.
