The last bastion of NetQuake seems to be 3 websites, in particular:
1. www.quakeone.com
2. www.pentstools.com
3. www.inside3d.com
And the majority of the NetQuake community seems to be more geared towards the mod'ing aspects of Quake 1, with a handful of about 10 players playing the actual game daily.
The most popular server in Quake 1 seems to switch between quake.shmack.net:26000 and dm.quaketx.com:26000, which is both a ffa runes mod server and a clanring dm server, respectively.
Most of the active player base in Quake 1 is centered in Europe, specially in QuakeWorld which is a different network protocol from NetQuake but the same game otherwise.
Back in 98, when "NetQuake" was considered active, there were about 20 dm crmod servers. Today there is about 6.
The active dm community at that time who played daily was about 40, and today that is about 10, which is 1/4, about the same ratio of the amount of servers now and then.
Ideas on what would bring netquake back to "active" status:
1. bringing the number of crmod dm servers to the same number as it was back then (today there is about 6, which is about 1/4 what it was back then)
2. bringing some sort of team leagues/tournaments which would foster a competitive aspect on the main quake sites such as quakeone.com and pentstools.com
3. adding more features to quake 1 such that it would stand par to europe's qw scene (quake tv, multiple view demos, etc)
