Well at least there are good doom/quake engine ports that run in Linux.

I run Xubuntu and I admit that I am totally in the dark about how it works,
        behind the scenes.
        I like it though.
I tried Ubuntu first but I wasn't a big fan of the GUI, so Xubuntu.

I use Steam for playing stuff (honestly, the thought of manual installs scare me) and for games that only run on Windows, I totally cheat and stream them from a Win10 machine.

I guess since I'm not a programmer, mostly a gamer/graphics person, I don't understand the hate for Windows 10. I upgraded from Windows 7 last year and it runs great for me. What is Windows 10 preventing you all from doing?

I love win 98, and I love XP, but it's impossible for me use they today. w10 is too expensive for my bag and i do not wanna to use the PC to play games... I think win xp was a great standart of desktop. I do not like win 7, I do not know, maybe is aero... win 8.1 + start8 was a good option, but I do not know why I began to feel uncomfortable with it , to the fact that I was totally unbearable :/

Many friends complain about Windows 10 ... I didnt try it, I am on linux and I am very happy with it

I liked SUSE back in the late 90's and have checked out a live iso or two of openSUSE in the last few years and it's definitely still a very solid well put together distro.

I play much less of them as I did in my teens through my 30's, but I still play the same games more or less, Doom, Quake, Quake2, Sin, Tiberian Sun, Dungeon Keeper, Freelancer, M.U.G.E.N., anything dos really or emulated in MAME, Dolphin, Zsnes, and on and on... Some newer stuff too like Creativerse, Minecraft, Skyrim, etc... All that runs fine in Linux for me and I have a windows 10 partition for those programs that don't, but it hardly gets used. I also have a virtualbox install of Windows 7 and XP for whatever, mostly use it to play Roblox games with my young son.

As Windows is becoming more or less what I imagined it would with increased spying, forced updates and general "funny" business I could never see myself using Windows as a main OS ever again with something as solid as Linux around.

I don't really game anymore, btw.

Working with an uncrippled UI, or at least in my opinion. Windows 2000 was perfect. I would still be using it if it were up to me.

When you say crippled UI, what do you mean? You just don't like the style of the start menu?

The start menu might as well not be there since others have done it better, the voice control is usually non negotiable if you want to use searching on other things, there are no customisation options other than wallpaper, and the lock screen is used for advertising.

                          @voice search

You cant use the right edge gesture menu to search?

I forgot to add that to what I hate about win 8. I am constantly gesturing the right edge by accident which takes the focus from what I'm doing. It's really minor since all I have to do is click anywhere to remove the menu but, it's still annoying.

I think it's funny that people are creating stuff for win 8+ to make it more like 98/xp

Windows 95 was useful and didn't overwhelm your PC usage, though, with loads of gimmicky features to say "hey, look at me! I'm innovating!" It just gave you a desktop, folders, and a start menu that worked and was quick, so that you could get on with your day.

                                Windows 10:

A start menu cluttered with junk and wasn't even laid out in the goddamned Windows 7 layout just so that you get a MS account and can't use your PC as effectively as you could with Windows 2000.
