  • Extrating Textures

I've looked in the Quake pak files and found nothing... no textures. Where are they located?

They are packed into the maps. You have to extract them from the BSP files. If you want vanilla textures, you can use them as extracted by WorldCraft or download them from Quaddicted.

I just got WorldCraft, it doesn't have anything to do with BSP's and I just searched on Quaddicted for the textures but they weren't there.

Get TexMex. Open .bsp file with TexMex by doing Open --> File --> Select .bsp from the file type and then find map and open it.

        Viola!

TexMex is available at Quake Adapter for Worldcraft 3.3 ... among other places.

Does TexMex also insert the textures back into the bsps?

Also, if I want to replace a common texture shared by many bsps, do I have to insert my edited texture into every bsp that uses it?

Insert back into .bsp? Not sure. Try it.

Edited texture back into every .bsp? Yes. Quake stores all textures that each map uses in the map file itself. This is why you can download a single map file and play it without needing anything else. If you want to change multiple maps, you have to re-wad each map file.

This is IF you aren't doing EXTERNAL textures like DarkPlaces and Qrack and many other engines use. In fact, if you are just looking to play with the map retexturing you should download the Quake Retexturing Project and extract to id1\textures and edit those files in an image editor. No need to alter the map files and changing a single external texture in Photoshop or such will affect all maps.

Why are the textures so small?

And, what's with this WAD file? How do I get the textures?

Quake was DOS application that runs in 320x240 resolution that required an Intel 486 processor or higher.
