I think what Wikileaks did was awesome.

I don't think the government should be keeping secrets and half the time what the government is doing internationally is very questionable.

The US government under any administration ends up playing a lot of games with other countries that it shouldn't be doing. And in the case of Iraq and Afghanistan withholds or denies access to information that it should not be doing.

The US is far more involved in silly international political games than it should be. They have more important things to do like fix the economy, etc. We invaded Afghanistan nearly 10 years ago to find Bin Laden, here hasn't been there in several years so I guess our mission has changed to building an oil pipeline or who knows what --- I don't know why we are over there ... does anyone?

That's the US government for you.

Meanwhile, we spend $200 billion a year on airport security and make air travel miserable because of an attack 10 years ago. If the US government was a public corporation, I think most people would sell all the stock and sue them for incompetence.

      /My 2 cents

We're over there to try create a democracy out of people who are illiterate and don't give a rats ass about our kind of thinking. Billions of our tax dollars have been spent to train and *employ* afghans to create a police force that's laughable.

And i'm on the fence about the whole wikileaks thing. On one hand, we should know what's going on in our government, since we vote them in, and they are for the people. And its also good that if our government is doing questionable things, they should be exposted. On the other, secret is secret, I wouldn't want someone posting my address, bank account etc to everyone on the internet.

Unless our plan is to spend a trillion dollars building them schools so they can read, building them roads, water and power infrastructure and building factories so they have jobs, it isn't going to work.

Yeah, I know you already know that.

I can't think of any good reason why we are over there.

            since we vote them in
Do we vote them in? Or is it the illusion we are?

We have a two party system which have an effective monopoly (duopoly) over the political system. You cannot even get on the ballot in most states unless you are the anointed party candidate.

The political parties decide the 2 "choices" on the ballot. Much of it is funded by multinational corporations giving political contributions (oh yeah, these multinational corporations also do our "news" channels).

To me, that is little different than old Soviet Russia having 1 choice on the ballot that they selected for you. Except the 2 party system uses the divide and conquer approach.

It shouldn't be depressing. The debt clock is a clock.

For the past 50 years, the US government has run amok in spending and become fat and bloated and pursued bad economic and trade policies and political policies left and right.

Now it has to reform or go broke. I personally get a kick out of the idea of the "Washington culture" working hundred thousand dollar a year jobs with no accountability sweating it out.

I don't know I didn't read the wikileaked documents but I will. The government is two faced what they say and what they do can be totally different.

While I'm sure many people who live in this region just want to live their life and be happy, someone will always take advantage of the situation. If we make a better army for them, someone will use that army against us, if we build them schools, they teach their kids how to hate us. Because of religion.

I have to agree w/ Baker on this. What Wikileaks has done is a glorious thing.
The truth should be more powerful than deceit, shady bargains, and the almighty dollar. We've had a few thousand years or so of that and it isn't working.

In the U.S., this administration has declared it's longing for transparency, and now they have it. Oh the incredulity - they're all butthurt. I guess for liberals "transparency" means "what we can filter down for you once we can blame it on Bush". FUNNY how the same party that portrays anyone that wears an American flag as a "right wing bigot" can brazenly declare someone is a "terrorist" for telling the truth. It's a complete hypocrisy and a joke. The one party state masquerading as a 2 party state - as Jello Biafra once so eloquently put it. The endgame of politicians is: take your money, your rights, and your privacy and leave you the "change".

We need more organizations like this to open people's eyes a bit wider at what's going on around them. The truth should never be considered unpatriotic or the revelation "a terrorist threat". Politicians like to throw the jargon around - that it's "put many lives and interests in jeopardy"... but whose lives? The shady diplomats and politicians? Oh that really is a blow, isn't it? The interests of the Corporations? Well, we can't have that because they're so freaking important. The response to this leak has been very telling of our elected officials and their motives. I wish more people would see it.

                              Baker is right.

Your government lied to the United Nations to start a war of aggression, which is illegal.

If you think this is treason, then you have no idea what you're talking about. You were probably 12 when the whole thing started.

The people have a right to know what's going on in the world. And I believe most of the anti-Wikileaks rhetorics are sponsored by your government and its friends in the media.
