You can make opengl quake engines look more like 'software-rendered' Quake by setting gl_texturemode gl_nearest.

Yes and it looks gorgeous!
GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_LINEAR is even better as it reduces pixel mess in the distance.
Filtered textures look so ugly.

I just finished part 1 of something I had half done of my harddisk for ages, some series showing the differences. Software vs GLQuake: Texture filtering
No idea when I will finish the later parts.
