  • Windows users - where have you installed Quake to?

    This is for a feature I'm planning for the next release of DirectQ, and I need to know the most common, likely of expected install locations for Quake. Right now I'm guessing that the following are good candidates:

    C:\Quake
    C:\Program Files\Quake
    C:\Program Files\Games\Quake
    C:\Games\Quake

    (replace C with your drive letter of choice)

    Anywhere else I need to know about?

    Don't ask about the feature just yet, all will be revealed...

                    Another desktop person! I had suspected a few might do that, so I'll need to include the desktop too. I'll also need to check for folder names beginning with "quake" rather than just called "quake" (another thing I had suspected might be needed).

                      why not just make the installer find the quake program on peoples computer? or just make it .rar or .zip etc with instructions in a text file.. but mines c:\quake\

                        Why doesn't Microsoft pick one place to install specific shit and keep with it?

                        MHQuake looks interesting. I'm going to try it out.

                        I have Quake in C:\Program Files\Quake.

                          On a, say, 160GB hard drive with 70,000 files it might take 45 minutes.

                          The old Team Fortress 2.5 installer from the 1990s does that and it takes forever!

                            d:\testq1\
                            used to be d:\quake1\

                            this is easy. Just do this:

                            switch(windows.username)
                            {
                            case "efess":
                            quakedir= "d:\testq1\";
                            break;
                            ..
                            iterate through everyone in this thread
                            ..
                            default:
                            quakedir= "c:\quake1";
                            break;
                            }

                              There is no installer, and that's part of where the problem is. We're really talking about a DOS program here after all, so we gotta look at a lot of the things it does as being reasonable back in the DOS days.

                              As for time to search the entire HD, it's not that bad really. Right now in tests I can find Quake in about 30 seconds (in C:\Quake) after a full recursive scan through everything up to Q, and that includes my rather extensive pr0n^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H Music collection.
