@the captain: Not sure when you stopped playing, but if it was anywhere between '99 and '03, a lot has changed, software wise. There is more to learn about modern Quake than there ever was about old-school Quake. So don't feel bad

I stopped playing around '99. I had a film making company at the time and wasn't into video games as much. Also with Quake II & III becoming more popular, I was just not feeling it. But, now, movies are dead, long live the videogame!
I have download some of the new clients Darkplaces, EZquake, and Proquake, So far, I'm really digging the EZQuake, great frame rates. I'm not have much luck picking up a multiplayer game though, most of the servers seem to be ghost towns.
Right now, I'm just trying to get a server up and running, so I can show off my favorite maps to the guys at the office. Not much luck yet, I got a post about it on the servers forum page.
Also, If I remember correctly, The grappling hook was a mod, but I can't seem to find it. Is this something built in to the newer clients?

Got quake in '97-'98 loved it. Was a listener of marilyn mansons music so NIN went down a treat.
~Loved painkeep to bits, barely ever played online ...56k modem = pingdeath.
Recently played through SOA and DOE, SOA was better, DOE wasn't as bad as some reviews made it out to be, some of the monsters were amazing (statues coming to life ect'.)
Used to fight against Squirtbot, other folks hated it, It wasn't great AI but pretty much bug-proof.
~Did a little mapping with Qoole, then WorldCraft. Currently struggling with .qc trying to help on a mod (long term ambition of mine has been to get on a mod team ....the functionality isn't quite there ATM, figured I could help with the code since I've done paid work with PHP ....but C(+/++/#/*Q) is an unforgiving mistress and I can't do higher-thinking without ma weedz ...guess I got a lot of hang ups on the cerebral side, and weedz has been stupid hard to get this week.
- Your advice is not needed or wanted on that front.
Had Q2, doom and final doom on the original playstation; shareware doom (didn't everyone?) and Quake1 on PC.
If you've ever heard of ElectricLlama ....he pwnd the crap out of me ...50 kills to nothin' ...havn't played Q1 online since. (QuakeLive reminds me of that fight everytime, I'm gonna blame it on my connection being from BT.)----------------------------------------

I am a student in University. I study Mechanical Engineering. I started playing Quake in 2000. I love the Quake series."Through my contact lenses, I have seen them all, I've seen wicked clowns and broken dreams / Crazy men in jumpsuits trying to be extreme and messing around with your computer screen" - Creative Rhyme (03/23/2012)

Hey all, started playing Quake when it was first released as shareware, and bought it as soon as It was available. Played QW forever and loved it. Hung around and played Q2 and a little Q3 but got bored because it just wasnt the same. Decided to install XP on an old computer and put some old games on it. I see no one plays QW now, so I installed Proquake and Qrack. Are those the most used for multiplayer? I'm sure no one uses Game Spy anymore, so how do you find servers now days?
