I have read that darkplaces isn't compatible with some quake servers? Is this still the case?

    Thanks

darkplaces is compatible with any servers and any server-side mods

i use darkplaces myself exclusively and never had any problems with any servers
      .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
      > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

        Hi SH
I'm no Quake expert but connecting from Darkplaces Client to a Netquake engined server, which for example uses proquake, is usually not a problem.
However, it's my understanding that if you use Darkplaces as the server engine, in some configurations you can exclude some other Quake engines from being able to connect. I seem to recall hearing that Darkplaces can use it's own protocols which are [alledgedly] more stable but can preclude other non-DP Quake clients from being able to connect to the DP server.
Don't get me wrong, DP is a good engine which has lot of interesting features and is quite popular, especially for the Single Player experience. Like I said, I'm no expert so this is based only on previous conversations and I could be way off here.
I'm sure someone more learned than I (Spike? Rook) will jump in here if I have misunderstood.

        Kind regards

I am not aware of any modern servers running something like Proquake that you couldn't connect to. It's pretty versatile now. Give us a bit more information on what type of server you want to play on. DP has two different protocols you could use. DP7, which is the default protocol and QuakeDP which is more like the original netquake. If you needed to change it to the QuakeDP protocol for compatibility you can use this cvar:

          Code:
          sv_protocolname "QUAKE"
In your autoexec.cfg or in the console before connecting or running a server.

Thanks all. I'm not sure yet about which servers/games, but likely it'll be coop.

I didn't manage to connect to rage.quakeone.com. Just said connection failed. *Edit: tried port 26000 and that works.

I found some others in the browser, but after a few mins kept getting the disconnect icon up and lagged out.

But while I was there I noticed people I were fragging were dropping weird, multi-coloured pyramid things. I'm wondering if they are meant to be like that or I'm missing some texture or other?

By the way, is there a startup flag to go straight to a server that I could in a shell script?

            I tried

            -connect rage.quakeone.com:26000

            But that didn't work.

              @Slackhead

Darkplaces will not download maps automatically like other clients. It is advised you grab the map packs here. They have EZ installers for them. Get the latest darkplaces build 20140513 . Also make sure you don't have any strange left over config.cfg or autoexec.cfg files from a previous install or similar. Those are located in:

              C:\Users\YourUserName\Saved Games\darkplaces
And to get the most out of your network connection with DP I'd suggest these cvars in the console or in your autoexec.cfg:

              rate 25000
              _cl_rate 25000
              sys_ticrate .025
              cl_nolerp 0
              cl_movement 0
For a full list of cvars check here.

              Happy Quakin

                  Instead of that use this:

                  +connect rage.quakeone.com:26000
                  Cheers.

That's good now I can make several shell scripts.

                    C:\Users\YourUserName\Saved Games\darkplaces
Any idea where linux version saves these?

Hmm all the maps links seem to be dead.

Errm... If I had to guess probably /home/username/darkplaces

Edit: Might also check /bin or /opt
