my mind is to "fix" the texture pack, not to rebuild it... i'll leave many textures as the originals

It's a bit offtopic but...
here is the link to download it at full resolution (1920x1440)
http://hellcathq.com/h2tp/images/TITLEPIC.tga
to use it you must locate the same file in your texture pack and replace it (extension may change, it doesnt matter)
I'm searching for a very high detailed scan of a "doom II" poster or game box to enhance doom2 title screen...

UPDATE 2 ( 2010-10-08 )
I did the following in Update 2:
1) Rewrite installation instructions (from above). Made it easier to understand.
2) Got the newest Heretic Pack "jhrp-20090703" and modified it with these additions:
- New Gargoyle Monster is included now
- New Skull in Main Menu is included now
So you need less files now (which means less installation trouble).
New Wand model is the only thing, that must be installed separately. Sorry.
- All HUD-Weapon models are corrected (they had wrong offsets)
This means, you could only see a part of the in-hand-weapon.
Which is corrected now. Optimized for FOV = 100 !
3) Modified newest Hexen Pack with these additions:
- New Afrit Monster is included now
- Older but much better Ettin Monster is included now
- New Title picture in Main Menu is included now
So you need less files now (which means less installation trouble).
- All HUD-Weapon models are corrected (they had wrong offsets) similar to Heretic.
This means, you could only see a part of the in-hand-weapon.
Which is corrected now. Optimized for FOV = 100 !
- Deactivated the ugly new 3D models for: 3rd mage weapon and 3rd cleric weapon.
You will see the original Sprite models now for those 2 weapons now.
- Some new GUI-skins for visual improvement.
Links in attachment of post #1 have been updated !
Have fun

Thank you very much for your link Spinvis !
This game will never die. Just like Hexen and Quake
Very talented designers and coders will breath constantly new life into these gems.
It is an Items Pack with wonderful models. Looks FANTASTIC.
But I will not update my first post, because the audience here in this forum is not so interested in Heretic/Hexen.
Thank you again my friend.
A PM has reached you. Please check your inbox.

Nothing wrong with highres packs for the games in general, but if the textures/models are not EXACT replicas of the originals with higher res, the whole project is useless. I have checked with and without highres textures in Heretic and Hexen, and the difference in atmosphere is just too huge. I go along with using highres GUI stuff or something, but when it comes down to models or textures, overall quality is just too poor and sometimes doesn't even try to imitate what it's supposed to look like.
The only highres project that I know which makes the game look equal (or at least very similar) to the lowres version is the one for Duke3D. I just wonder why this kind of quality is unmatched for the Doom engine titles.Last edited by NightFright; 11-15-2010, 05:46 AM.

the difference in atmosphere is not driven by the EXACT match of new textures with old ones... It's only to create new textures IN LINE with the old textures philosopy.
I know, my way to produce textures is very different and "free", but i thik that is possible to keep the same "atmosphere" with textures that are a bit "different" from originals...

Of course the efforts to recreate the textures is appreciated. Still, I think someone who has never played the games before should first start without the highres textures and use them later. I guess it's a matter of personal philosophy. Highres stuff is always some form of interpretation, unless it's simply ripped and rescaled from original game resources.

firstly, awesome thread.
I never thought much of jdoom (for me the magic was gone) and I never played hexen BUT JHeretic is fokking mega!
Still, that 2d hellstaff is a real bugbear.
also the gibs for gaygoyles, desciples and iron liches are still sprites too, I could even live with them but that hellstaff!?! it just wrecks it for me, here's to hoping someone releases one soon...

What is usually overlooked is that the old 8 bit textures are also only approximations, due to the extreme technical limitation of only being able to use 256 colors, which is due to space restrictions on the old media, the lack of processing power and RAM of old PCs and the low speed of the old networks. 24 bit images did exist in 1996, in principle.
8 bit textures were not the artists' free choice; they didn't create 8 bit textures instead of 24 bit out of their own free will. It wasn't like they chose it as their artistical medium. As such, the original textures are a compromise already.
