Herro, I'm Seekay (duh!).
I know it may sound weird, but I actually started playing Quake.... just two months ago. Not because I didn't know it or because I was some Modern Military Shooter peasant, but because Quake and many other games by id got banned here in Germany. It still is, which is weird considering that Doom got free of the ban not too long ago and a lot more games with a lot more violence got released uncut with USK 16 and 18. You can't get it on id's website or Steam either, thanks to outdated German laws.
So, you may wonder how I got it. There were two options - the lazy and bad one, or the smart and good one. I was lazy and bad and pirated it. But considering how old the game it is, I don't think id would mind at that point. Before I got Quake, I had the chance to get at least some taste of Quake with Valve's Deathmatch Classic, and I absolutely loved that game. It obviously plays different than the original Quake, but it's still amazing and has that Quake feel to it. And there are even some people playing it to this day!
I decided to get DarkPlaces and played through the Single Player. I have missed out on so, so, much. It's really an amazing example of what today's FPS is lacking. Rocketjumping, strafejumping, searching for keys and buttons to open doors, secrets with useful items, using different weapons for different enemies, running and jumping around to avoid getting hit, having to manage ammo, healthkits, armor and other special items like Quad-Damage, trying out all sorts of different strategies, mod support.. just gotta love it.
I got Jackhammer and now learn how to make maps. It's easier than mapping for Half-Life, but I'm still a bad artist and mostly use the same ugly textures and make blocky rooms all the time , but at least I'm having a hell lot of fun.
The website isn't really new to me, but I never thought about making an account until now. I'm glad this site exists, it really helped me a lot making playing Quake easier. It's thanks to you guys that I found other engines, mods, HD soundtracks, and useful tips and advises. You guys rock!
Thank you for reading.
